In Vagabond<\/em>, Curry recalls being \u201cunimpressed\u201d by Cruise\u2019s rapidly growing fame after his breakout roles in Risky Business<\/em> and All the Right Moves<\/em>. \u201cBefore we met on the set of Legend<\/em>, I had seen Risky Business<\/em>, with Tom cast perfectly as the cute, innocent young rebel,\u201d Curry wrote. \u201cAnd when we finally appeared in a film together, he was very nice and easy to be around \u2014 but he\u2019s also quite unique, and not a person I fully understood. We never had any issues, but I cannot say I felt the appeal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added candidly, \u201cUnlike many others in the eighties, I wasn\u2019t desperately star-struck around him; in fact, I was kind of dreading it. I couldn\u2019t really identify why. Maybe he sensed my reticence and was consequently a little awkward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Respect for Discipline, But Unimpressed by the Hype<\/span><\/h3>\n

Despite his reservations, Curry expressed respect for Cruise\u2019s work ethic and total commitment to the role. \u201cHe was very into fully embodying his role, and I believe even requested to sleep on the snow set because he wanted to feel at home there,\u201d Curry shared. Still, the Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em> star admitted to finding the Hollywood buzz surrounding Cruise \u201ca bit much,\u201d noting that the film industry\u2019s fascination with looks and image often overshadowed genuine artistry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the premise of the film, he loses his power, but he looks great doing it,\u201d Curry observed, wryly referencing the way Cruise\u2019s on-screen heroism often complemented his charisma. \u201cHe has the perks that looks and money bring in Hollywood\u2026 I was just never blown away by his talent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Curry\u2019s portrayal of the Lord of Darkness remains one of the most iconic makeup transformations in cinema history \u2014 one that required hours in the makeup chair each day. \u201cThe process of turning me into the Lord of Darkness took roughly six hours every day,\u201d he recalled. \u201cMy senses were no doubt dulled beneath my prosthetics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The actor noted that long production days and heavy prosthetics limited his interaction with Cruise. \u201cI didn\u2019t really engage with Tom Cruise all that much, perhaps because this wasn\u2019t the type of film where we\u2019d all sit around chatting,\u201d Curry explained. \u201cRidley didn\u2019t foster that environment, and in my case, my prosthetics regimen meant that I couldn\u2019t exactly go out for pints prior to having my horns and hooves removed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Curry\u2019s reflections may surprise some fans, his overall tone is one of honesty rather than hostility. \u201cThere\u2019s not much I can say definitively about him, since we didn\u2019t get to know each other very well,\u201d he concluded. \u201cBut at the end of the day, I found him to be a very thoughtful, considerate colleague \u2014 which I appreciated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
