WASHINGTON \u2014 A routine oversight hearing turned into a political firestorm Wednesday as Attorney General Pam Bondi<\/span><\/span> lashed out at lawmakers from both parties during a tense appearance before the House Judiciary Committee<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most explosive exchange came when Bondi verbally sparred with Ranking Member Jamie Raskin<\/span><\/span> (D-Md.), at one point calling him a \u201cwashed-up, loser lawyer \u2014 not even a lawyer,\u201d after he pressed her over the Justice Department\u2019s handling of recently released files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bondi\u2019s testimony followed the release of millions of pages of investigative materials tied to Epstein and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell<\/span><\/span>. Several victims were present in the hearing room as lawmakers grilled the attorney general over whether the Department of Justice had mishandled sensitive information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Raskin accused Bondi of failing to prioritize victims, arguing that the DOJ had revealed identifying details of some survivors while redacting the names of wealthy and powerful individuals allegedly connected to Epstein.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not showing a lot of interest in the victims,\u201d Raskin charged. \u201cAs attorney general you\u2019re siding with the perpetrators and you\u2019re ignoring the victims.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The exchange quickly escalated. When Raskin objected to Bondi\u2019s extended responses and demanded that Chairman Jim Jordan<\/span><\/span> (R-Ohio) restore time to retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler<\/span><\/span> (D-N.Y.), Bondi fired back.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t tell me anything,\u201d she snapped, before delivering the insult that stunned the hearing room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bondi then pivoted to defend President Donald Trump, rebuking Nadler over past allegations related to the 2016 election investigation led by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller<\/span><\/span>. She asserted that Mueller found \u201cno evidence\u201d of foreign interference benefiting Trump and demanded apologies from Democrats who had previously criticized the president.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou all should be apologizing,\u201d Bondi said. \u201cYou sit here and you attack the president, and I am not going to have it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The hearing\u2019s central focus remained the so-called \u201cEpstein files.\u201d Lawmakers from both parties questioned why certain names believed to be potential co-conspirators were redacted, while some victims\u2019 identities appeared in unredacted form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Thomas Massie<\/span><\/span> (R-Ky.) sharply criticized the DOJ\u2019s handling of the documents, calling the unmasking of any victim information \u201cliterally the worst thing you could do to the survivors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf any man\u2019s name was redacted that should not have been, we will of course unredact it,\u201d Bondi responded. \u201cIf a victim\u2019s name was unredacted, please bring it to us, and we will redact it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Massie, along with Rep. Ro Khanna<\/span><\/span> (D-Calif.), co-authored transparency legislation signed last November requiring the release of Epstein-related records. Since then, both lawmakers have publicly questioned inconsistencies in the DOJ\u2019s redaction process.<\/span><\/p>\n

At one point, Bondi dismissed Massie as suffering from \u201cTrump Derangement Syndrome\u201d and labeled him a \u201cfailed politician,\u201d further intensifying partisan tensions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Pramila Jayapal<\/span><\/span> (D-Wash.) also confronted Bondi, asking victims in attendance to stand if they had been unable to meet with the Justice Department. Bondi declined to engage directly, accusing Democrats of political theatrics and questioning why similar scrutiny had not been directed at former Attorney General Merrick Garland<\/span><\/span> during his tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the marathon session, Bondi repeatedly argued that Democratic interest in Epstein\u2019s case had intensified only because Trump returned to office. She countered that many Democratic donors and public figures had longstanding associations with Epstein prior to his 2019 federal arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the hearing\u2019s close, little consensus had emerged. Instead, the proceedings underscored the deep partisan divide surrounding the Epstein investigation, transparency demands, and broader accusations of political weaponization within the Justice Department.<\/span><\/p>\n

What began as oversight quickly devolved into personal attacks and political score-settling \u2014 leaving victims, lawmakers, and the public still seeking clarity amid the clash.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
