Appearing via video link on February 6, 2026, the 78-year-old music icon said he was \u201cincensed\u201d when he learned his landlines may have been tapped\u2014an intrusion he called \u201cabhorrent\u201d and \u201coutside even the most basic standards of human decency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Elton testified against Associated Newspapers Limited<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, publisher of the Daily Mail<\/span><\/span><\/em>, as part of a sweeping phone-hacking and unlawful information-gathering trial. Speaking remotely due to serious eyesight complications stemming from a 2024 infection that left him blind in one eye, the singer apologized for not attending in person but made clear his resolve had not wavered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The moment that crystallized his anger, Elton told the court, came when actress and longtime friend Elizabeth Hurley<\/span><\/span><\/strong> alerted him to suspicious reporting patterns that suggested private surveillance.
