Despite the runaway success of F1<\/span><\/span><\/em>, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali<\/span><\/span><\/strong> has made it clear that a sequel is far from guaranteed\u2014and certainly not coming anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on February 4 at an Apple TV press event, Domenicali delivered a sobering message to fans already clamoring for Brad Pitt\u2019s return to the grid. \u201cWe need to digest the success,\u201d he said, stressing that a follow-up would only happen under one strict condition: it has to be \u201cvery, very good.\u201d Not bigger. Not faster. Better.<\/span><\/p>\n

The caution is striking given the film\u2019s achievements. Directed by Joseph Kosinski<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and starring Brad Pitt<\/span><\/span><\/strong> as veteran driver Sonny Hayes, F1<\/em> didn\u2019t just cross the finish line\u2014it obliterated expectations. Released in June 2025, the film grossed over $630 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing motorsports movie in history. More surprising still, it earned four Academy Award nominations, including a rare Best Picture nod for a sports film.<\/span><\/p>\n

That prestige is precisely why Domenicali is hesitant. In his view, F1<\/em> worked because it was singular. Shot across real race weekends over multiple seasons, embedded directly into the Formula 1 circus, the film achieved a level of authenticity no previous racing movie had attempted. Repeating that formula without diluting its impact is a massive challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to think of a new one, it has to be unique,\u201d Domenicali emphasized. \u201cOtherwise, you risk damaging something special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That realism comes at a cost\u2014time. Domenicali confirmed that no sequel would arrive next year, effectively ruling out 2027. The earliest possible return for Pitt\u2019s Sonny Hayes would be 2028, assuming the creative team can justify the story and logistics. Coordinating filming with the FIA, teams, drivers, and global race calendar requires years of planning, not months.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a broader strategy at play. Formula 1 is entering what Domenicali described as a new \u201ccultural dimension,\u201d fueled by its expanding partnership with Apple, which becomes the exclusive U.S. broadcaster for F1 races in 2026. The sport no longer needs a rushed sequel to stay relevant\u2014real-life drama unfolds 24 times a year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple executive Eddy Cue leaned into that idea with a joke that landed pointedly: \u201cWe\u2019ve got 24 F1 movies this year on Apple TV,\u201d he said, referring to the 2026 race calendar. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t even know the ending.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For fans, the message is clear and frustratingly calm: patience. F1<\/em> didn\u2019t just succeed\u2014it earned its reputation. And according to Domenicali, that means any sequel has to earn its existence too.<\/span><\/p>\n
