Meant to signal a triumphant return, the track instead became, in <strong data-start=\"363\" data-end=\"404\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Slash<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s words, \u201cthe sound of breaking up\u201d\u2014a recording so toxic it captured the band\u2019s collapse in real time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"805\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Recorded for the soundtrack to <strong data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"581\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Interview with the Vampire<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the cover should have been a prestige moment. It paired one of rock\u2019s most notorious bands with a classic from <strong data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"735\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">The Rolling Stones<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Instead, it exposed how far the internal chemistry had deteriorated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"846\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Replacement That Lit the Fuse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"847\" data-end=\"1238\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The trouble started before Slash even hit record. Frontman <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"947\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Axl Rose<\/span><\/span><\/strong> unilaterally fired rhythm guitarist <strong data-start=\"984\" data-end=\"1025\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Gilby Clarke<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and replaced him with his longtime friend <strong data-start=\"1068\" data-end=\"1109\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Paul Tobias<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014without consulting the rest of the band. Slash, who had grown close to Clarke, was blindsided. But the real betrayal came later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1240\" data-end=\"1608\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During post-production, Slash discovered that Tobias had overdubbed guitar parts without his knowledge. Worse, those parts were layered <em data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1385\">against<\/em> Slash\u2019s own solo\u2014little \u201canswers,\u201d as he described them\u2014creating a thin, cluttered sound that made him realize the band no longer functioned as a unit. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t a band anymore,\u201d Slash later said. \u201cIt was a dictatorship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1639\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Forced to Copy a Legend<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"2008\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The insult deepened when Rose demanded that Slash replicate <strong data-start=\"1700\" data-end=\"1741\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Keith Richards<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2019 original solo almost note-for-note. Slash, whose identity was built on improvisation and feel, saw the order as creatively humiliating. Richards\u2019 original performance was untouchable; copying it robbed the cover of any reason to exist\u2014and robbed Slash of his voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2189\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Critics weren\u2019t kind. <strong data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2075\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Spin<\/span><\/span><\/strong> later infamously ranked the track dead last among all Guns N\u2019 Roses songs, cementing its reputation as a misfire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2214\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The End of an Era<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2557\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSympathy for the Devil\u201d became the last time the classic lineup\u2014Rose, Slash, and <strong data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2340\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Duff McKagan<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014recorded together until their 2016 reunion. Slash has said he\u2019d happily erase the song from the catalog if he could. Even his enthusiasm for the project evaporated after a private screening of the film left him cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2559\" data-end=\"2859\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Looking back, the cover isn\u2019t just a bad idea poorly executed. It\u2019s a document of implosion: ego over chemistry, control over collaboration.
