And yet, as she prepares to receive one of the industry\u2019s highest humanitarian honors, Carey remains strikingly resistant to one particular word: legend<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a new Billboard<\/span><\/span><\/strong> cover story, Carey reflected on her decades-long career, her growing philanthropic focus, and her upcoming recognition as MusiCares<\/span><\/span><\/strong> 2026 Person of the Year. Despite the accolades, Carey was clear-eyed about how she sees herself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody has their own little meanings for what things they say,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut I don\u2019t call myself a legend. I\u2019m just still working, still trying hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That mindset may be exactly why her career has endured. Rather than viewing success as something fixed in the past, Carey frames it as ongoing effort\u2014an approach that has allowed her to evolve across eras without becoming frozen by her own myth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Recording Academy\u2019s philanthropic arm will formally honor Carey on January 30, 2026, placing her among past recipients such as Dolly Parton<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Billy Joel<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Joni Mitchell<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and Smokey Robinson<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. The award recognizes not just artistic achievement, but sustained contributions to community care and advocacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMariah Carey\u2019s influence extends far beyond her remarkable artistry,\u201d said MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters<\/span><\/span><\/strong> in a statement. \u201cShe has used her platform consistently to provide tangible support to communities\u2026 Her work exemplifies the values at the heart of MusiCares.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Carey\u2019s philanthropic footprint is wide-ranging. Over the years, she has supported causes tied to human rights, education, disaster relief, and youth empowerment. In December 2025, she made headlines when her custom pink \u201cProtect the Dolls\u201d T-shirt\u2014worn during a U.K. LGBTQ+ Pride performance\u2014sold for more than $5,000 at a GLAAD<\/span><\/span><\/strong> auction benefiting the transgender community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll of us should do what we can to give back something,\u201d Carey said. \u201cIt\u2019s also important to do more than that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 MusiCares gala will reflect Carey\u2019s cross-generational influence, featuring tribute performances from artists including Jennifer Hudson<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, John Legend<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Foo Fighters<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Adam Lambert<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and Billy Porter<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, with Jermaine Dupri<\/span><\/span><\/strong> providing a DJ set.<\/span><\/p>\n
