Some collaborations feel destined. Others feel earned. When Harrison Ford<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and Michael J. Fox<\/span><\/span><\/strong> finally worked together on Season 3 of Shrinking<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the result was something far more profound than prestige casting\u2014it was recognition, empathy, and truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fox, who has lived with Parkinson\u2019s disease for more than three decades, joined the Apple TV+ series as a Parkinson\u2019s patient who befriends Ford\u2019s character, Dr. Paul Rhoades\u2014a therapist also battling the neurodegenerative condition. What Fox didn\u2019t expect, however, was how deeply Ford\u2019s portrayal would resonate with him on a personal level.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking in a joint interview with Vanity Fair<\/em>, Fox admitted Ford\u2019s performance caught him completely off guard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one thing that\u2019s amazing about Harrison,\u201d Fox said. \u201cI don\u2019t have to convince him I have Parkinson\u2019s\u2014but he had to convince me he had Parkinson\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That line alone says everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI Recognized Parkinson\u2019s in His Eyes\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

Fox explained that what moved him wasn\u2019t just the accuracy of Ford\u2019s physical performance, but the emotional fluency behind it. Ford, who does not have Parkinson\u2019s, had clearly done more than research symptoms\u2014he absorbed the lived experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I wasn\u2019t prepared for was how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it,\u201d Fox said. \u201cI recognized Parkinson\u2019s in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The result? Fox was overwhelmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was just brought to tears by it,\u201d he admitted.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Ford, now 83, the praise was humbling. He returned it instantly, calling Fox \u201cgenerous, supportive, open\u2014just a wonderful person,\u201d before adding, with a trademark Ford flourish, \u201cand a pretty goddamn good actor too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A Role That Carried Weight<\/span><\/h3>\n

Ford acknowledged the responsibility that came with portraying Parkinson\u2019s onscreen, especially opposite someone who has lived it since being diagnosed at age 29 in 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a daunting disease and also a daunting job to represent it in an appropriate way,\u201d Ford said. \u201cIt was a very important experience for me to have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fox, who publicly revealed his diagnosis in 1998 and later founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, emphasized that therapy\u2014central to Shrinking<\/em>\u2014has always played a complex role in his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no talking cure for Parkinson\u2019s,\u201d Fox explained. \u201cBut I couldn\u2019t have gotten through Parkinson\u2019s without therapy. You end up educating the therapist as much as they\u2019re educating you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That tension\u2014between treatment and acceptance\u2014is exactly what the new season explores, as Paul begins counseling other Parkinson\u2019s patients, including Fox\u2019s character.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Reunion That Felt Right<\/span><\/h3>\n

The role also reunited Fox with Bill Lawrence<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, who previously worked with him on Spin City<\/em>. Fox joked that their conversation was brief and blunt.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re doing a f\u2014ing show about Parkinson\u2019s with Harrison f\u2014ing Ford, and you don\u2019t call me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After announcing his retirement from acting in 2020, Shrinking<\/em> marked Fox\u2019s return\u2014and by his own account, the most comfortable set he\u2019s ever been on.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time, I didn\u2019t have to worry,\u201d he told People<\/em>. \u201cI just do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
