A dark, swaggering classic paired with a gothic blockbuster directed by <strong data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"520\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Neil Jordan<\/span><\/span><\/strong> seemed like a perfect match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"551\" data-end=\"707\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Instead, the song became something far more ominous. According to <strong data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"658\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Slash<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, it wasn\u2019t a comeback at all \u2014 it was a requiem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"982\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By the mid-1990s, tensions between Slash and <strong data-start=\"754\" data-end=\"795\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Axl Rose<\/span><\/span><\/strong> were already simmering from years of creative and personal clashes dating back to the <em data-start=\"882\" data-end=\"901\">Use Your Illusion<\/em> era. But \u201cSympathy for the Devil\u201d pushed that friction past the point of repair.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"984\" data-end=\"1011\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A Secret 2 A.M. Session<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1409\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Slash recorded his parts for the track in good faith, laying down what he believed would be the definitive guitar backbone \u2014 including a signature solo meant to carry the song\u2019s menace. Unknown to him, Axl later returned to the studio in the middle of the night. They were layered directly over Slash\u2019s work \u2014 in places even echoing and shadowing his solo lines. When Slash finally heard the completed mix, the shock wasn\u2019t just musical. It was existential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1765\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat was the sound of the band breaking up, right there,\u201d he later said. To him, it wasn\u2019t collaboration \u2014 it was replacement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"1787\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More Than a Song<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"2103\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The issue wasn\u2019t simply Tobias\u2019 playing. It was what the move represented. Slash believed Guns N\u2019 Roses worked because of a volatile but sacred chemistry among its members. Bringing in an outsider behind his back signaled that Axl no longer viewed the band as a collective, but as a vehicle under his sole control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2347\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Slash refused to acknowledge the track as a true Guns N\u2019 Roses recording. In his eyes, the secrecy shattered trust beyond repair. While fans debated the cover\u2019s merits, Slash heard something else entirely: the end of the band he helped build.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2373\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fallout and Finality<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2375\" data-end=\"2649\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Released in November 1994, the song benefited from the film\u2019s massive publicity, charting modestly and receiving heavy radio rotation. But internally, the damage was already done.
