According to the audit, the questionable cases include roughly 25,000 individuals listed as deceased and approximately 6,000 tenants classified as \u201cineligible non-American tenants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"1270\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">HUD Secretary <strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"900\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Scott Turner<\/span><\/span><\/strong> said the department is adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward misuse of federal housing funds. \u201cWe will leave no stone unturned,\u201d Turner said in a statement. \u201cIneligible non-citizens have no place to receive welfare benefits. According to HUD data, approximately 970,000 households live in public housing units managed by about 3,300 PHAs nationwide. Many of those agencies already require income verification, but citizenship and eligibility checks have varied in enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2408\" data-end=\"2915\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The move aligns with an executive order signed last February by President <strong data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2523\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, which directed HUD and other federal agencies to ensure undocumented immigrants are excluded from receiving taxpayer-funded benefits.
