After more than 40 years in Hollywood, Tom Cruise<\/strong> remains one of the industry\u2019s most enduring and dedicated stars. But despite his legendary career \u2014 from Top Gun<\/em> to Mission: Impossible<\/em> \u2014 the actor admits that watching his early work still makes him pause.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t watch my early movies,\u201d Cruise said with a laugh. \u201cI see a kid trying so hard \u2014 trying to understand the world, the work, and himself. It\u2019s like reading your old diary aloud. You cringe, but you also feel compassion for who you were.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From Rising Star to Reluctant Critic of His Younger Self<\/span><\/h3>\n

The star says time \u2014 and a few difficult lessons \u2014 reshaped his perspective on what truly matters in a career.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had films that soared and films that didn\u2019t connect,\u201d Cruise said. \u201cYou learn that neither defines you. What defines you is the work \u2014 showing up, giving everything, and then letting it go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From emotionally charged roles like Born on the Fourth of July<\/em> (1989) to his Oscar-nominated performance in Jerry Maguire<\/em> (1996), Cruise has constantly reinvented himself. Still actively filming the next Mission: Impossible<\/em> installment with longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie<\/strong>, Cruise says his focus has moved away from building a legacy and toward gratitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I step onto a set, I feel lucky,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what keeps me going \u2014 the love of cinema, the love of storytelling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He also credits the crews behind the camera as the unsung heroes of filmmaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou meet incredible people on every set \u2014 stunt teams, grips, costume designers \u2014 they\u2019re the heartbeat of filmmaking. If you forget that, you lose the joy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Still Learning, Still Moving Forward<\/span><\/h3>\n

Looking back, Cruise says he no longer judges his younger self harshly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t judge that kid in Risky Business<\/em> anymore,\u201d he said, smiling. \u201cHe was just trying to figure it out. In a way, I still am. That\u2019s what makes this journey so beautiful \u2014 it never ends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
