It is a direct tribute to Tyler\u2019s grandfather, Robert Joseph, who passed away during the album\u2019s production after a battle with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

For longtime fans, Robert Joseph was already a familiar presence. He appeared on the right side of the cover of Vessel<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, alongside the grandfather of drummer Josh Dun<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. But for Tyler, his grandfather was more than an image\u2014he was, as the song\u2019s title declares, a legend. Watching that towering figure slowly lose his sense of self left a wound that Tyler admits \u201cbroke\u201d him.<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes Legend<\/em> especially painful is how it was written in real time, following the progression of his grandfather\u2019s illness. Tyler has described the song as unfolding chronologically. The early sections reflect confusion and guilt, while the \u201cmiddle\u201d of the writing process was the hardest to endure. At that point, his grandfather was still alive, still physically present\u2014but no longer mentally able to understand that a song was being written in his honor. By the time Tyler reached the final verse, his grandfather had passed away. In an interview with Music Feeds<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, he explained that the ending of the song came from a place of acceptance rather than helplessness. One of the song\u2019s most poignant lines\u2014\u201cI wish she knew you\u201d\u2014carries layered grief. Tyler shares his grandfather\u2019s middle name, Robert, a legacy he later passed on to his daughter.
