White Supremacists aren\u2019t welcome here. We protect our own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"942\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNo-go zone\u201d is a loaded term, imported from European debates to describe areas where the rule of law is said to be weak and certain people are unsafe. That framing alone should alarm anyone who values a single standard of citizenship. In America, neighborhoods do not get to decide who may enter them\u2014full stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"1500\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When challenged online with the simple reminder that Americans can go where they please, Fateh doubled down: \u201cThis is a No-Go zone for white supremacists.\u201d The obvious question follows\u2014who decides who qualifies? But even before that, a more basic principle applies. In the United States, abhorrent views are still protected speech. A person could, legally, parade in offensive attire on a public sidewalk in Minneapolis. We defend that freedom not because the views are acceptable, but because the alternative\u2014selective access to public space\u2014is far worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"2054\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u2019s not be na\u00efve about the subtext. Fateh is unlikely to mean only avowed neo-Nazis. In recent months, Minnesota Democrats\u2014including <strong data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1678\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Tim Walz<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1721\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jacob Frey<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1768\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Ilhan Omar<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014have repeatedly characterized lawful actions by <strong data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"1858\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/span><\/span><\/strong> as racism. In that climate, it\u2019s reasonable to worry that support for border enforcement\u2014or even <strong data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"1997\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014could be swept into the definition of \u201cwhite supremacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2383\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The concern isn\u2019t hypothetical. Pro-Trump counter-protesters in <strong data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2161\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Minneapolis<\/span><\/span><\/strong> were reportedly assaulted, and one man was threatened for wearing an American flag sweatshirt in freezing temperatures. Against that backdrop, promising a \u201cno-go zone\u201d reads less like rhetoric and more like encouragement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2385\" data-end=\"2769\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fateh and his allies have also attacked journalists such as <strong data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2488\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Nick Shirley<\/span><\/span><\/strong> for reporting on a massive fraud case tied to Somali-run nonprofits\u2014an investigation federal prosecutors say siphoned billions from programs for children and seniors. The instinct to shield a community from scrutiny is understandable; endorsing exclusion from public space is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"3170\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We abolished \u201csundown towns\u201d because they violated the core American idea that rights do not depend on race, creed, or politics. Creating modern, ideological versions\u2014however well-intentioned the language\u2014revives the same poison. Minnesota, and Democrats especially, should say clearly and without caveat: there will be no European-style no-go zones here.
