What was meant to be a stadium-sized celebration of heavy music instead became a cautionary tale that still haunts Axl Rose<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and the legacy of rock excess. The infamous Montreal stop on the co-headlining Use Your Illusion<\/em> tour with Metallica<\/span><\/span><\/strong> remains Axl Rose\u2019s one true \u201cillusion\u201d regret\u2014a night when rock-and-roll anarchy spiraled completely out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n

The disaster unfolded at Olympic Stadium<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, before more than 53,000 fans. The evening\u2019s first shock came during Metallica\u2019s set, when frontman James Hetfield<\/span><\/span><\/strong> accidentally walked into a pyrotechnic blast while performing \u201cFade to Black.\u201d A miscommunication with the pyro crew triggered a 12,000-degree magnesium flame directly in his path.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hetfield suffered second- and third-degree burns to his arm, hand, and face.
