He has repeatedly insisted that tradition can never justify suffering, especially when the suffering is inflicted for pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1545\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">His opposition intensified after the <strong data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1174\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Hunting Act 2004<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, which banned hunting wild mammals with dogs, came under renewed political threat. Determined to prevent its repeal or weakening, May co-founded the <strong data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1365\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Save Me Trust<\/span><\/span><\/strong> in 2010 with conservationist Anne Brummer. Named after his Queen song \u201cSave Me,\u201d the organization became a frontline defender of animals targeted by what May calls \u201cblood sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"2012\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That stance put him in direct conflict with Britain\u2019s political and social establishment \u2014 including then\u2013Prime Minister <strong data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1709\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">David Cameron<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, whose government sought to loosen the ban through procedural changes. In a fiery 2015 appearance on BBC\u2019s <em data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"1828\">Newsnight<\/em>, May dismissed pro-hunting arguments from the <strong data-start=\"1875\" data-end=\"1916\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Countryside Alliance<\/span><\/span><\/strong> as \u201cabsolute bollocks,\u201d accusing them of masking cruelty behind euphemisms like \u201cpest control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2357\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For May, fox hunting is more than an animal welfare issue \u2014 it is a moral litmus test. He has argued that a society willing to tolerate the ritualized terror and death of animals for entertainment risks becoming numb to suffering altogether. In his view, compassion is indivisible: how humans treat animals reflects how they value life itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2716\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The backlash was fierce. May was ridiculed as a \u201ccelebrity meddler,\u201d attacked in tabloids, and sneered at by aristocrats who saw him as an outsider threatening centuries-old privilege. Rather than retreat, he embraced the role. He openly stated he was willing to sacrifice his public image if it meant exposing what he called the \u201ctrue face\u201d of fox hunting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2718\" data-end=\"2970\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Importantly, May has never dismissed rural culture as a whole. He has even supported \u201cclean boot\u201d hunting \u2014 bloodhound trails that follow a human scent rather than an animal \u2014 to prove that the thrill of riding and tracking can exist without bloodshed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2972\" data-end=\"3159\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In 2023, May was knighted for his contributions to music and charity. For him, the title \u201cSir\u201d is not an invitation into the elite he criticizes, but a louder megaphone for the voiceless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3161\" data-end=\"3382\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Brian May has already given the world unforgettable music.
