Sean Connery was gone, audiences were skeptical, and Roger Moore<\/span><\/span><\/strong> was about to debut as a very different kind of 007 in Live and Let Die<\/span><\/span><\/em>. Producers needed something unforgettable\u2014something that would instantly convince the world that Moore\u2019s Bond was worthy of the tuxedo. What they got instead was one of the most dangerous practical stunts ever filmed, and a near-mutiny from safety experts who believed someone was going to die.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sequence took place in Jamaica, at a real crocodile farm marked by a chilling warning sign: \u201cTrespassers Will Be Eaten.\u201d<\/em> This was no prop. The farm belonged to Ross Kananga<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, a legendary handler who proposed an escape so insane it bordered on suicidal. Bond, stranded on a tiny island, would flee by literally running across the backs of live crocodiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

When safety coordinators saw the setup, they were horrified. These were full-grown, half-ton predators\u2014no animatronics, no trick photography, no CGI safety net. The crocodiles were loosely tethered only to keep them roughly aligned. Their jaws, tails, and instincts were completely free. Insurance representatives and crew members begged director Guy Hamilton<\/span><\/span><\/strong> to cut the scene or replace it with doubles and camera tricks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filming was every bit as terrifying as predicted. It took five attempts to complete the shot. On the fourth take, a crocodile snapped at Kananga\u2019s heel, ripping through his trousers and flesh. He suffered severe injuries to his leg and face, requiring 193 stitches<\/strong>. Yet he insisted on finishing the stunt. Kananga was paid $60,000\u2014an enormous sum at the time, and still widely considered inadequate compensation for risking being eaten alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

At one point, a crocodile turned its head and bit the heel of Kananga\u2019s shoe. \u201cIf it had been me,\u201d Moore recalled, \u201cit would have been my entire leg.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The stunt\u2019s impact echoed beyond the scene itself. Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz<\/span><\/span><\/strong> was so impressed by Kananga\u2019s nerve that he named the film\u2019s villain\u2014Dr. Kananga, played by Yaphet Kotto<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u2014in his honor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decades later, the crocodile run remains a gold standard of practical filmmaking. It is shocking not because it looks dangerous, but because it was<\/em> dangerous. Roger Moore\u2019s insistence on keeping the stunt didn\u2019t just define his Bond debut\u2014it preserved a moment when cinema flirted openly with disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n
