The multi-hyphenate artist, born Dana Elaine Owens, has officially broken ground on RISE Living<\/em>, a transformative mixed-use housing project in her hometown, aimed at addressing Newark\u2019s critical affordable housing shortage and revitalizing a long-neglected neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n

The $14 million development\u2014named \u201cRISE\u201d as an acronym for Rita Is Still Everywhere<\/em>, in honor of Latifah\u2019s late mother, Rita Owens, a beloved Newark schoolteacher\u2014stands as a deeply personal milestone. Spearheaded by Latifah\u2019s BlueSugar Corporation in partnership with GonSosa Development and Life Assets Development, the project brings together housing, community services, and economic opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Vision for Renewal<\/span><\/h3>\n

Located near Springfield Avenue and spanning South 16th to 17th Streets, the RISE Living site will convert a blighted block into a vibrant community space. The project includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Community amenities<\/strong> such as a fitness center, business hub, EV charging stations, ground-floor parking, and 1,900 square feet of nonprofit commercial space. All units will include modern features like hardwood floors, stainless-steel appliances, and in-unit laundry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Economic benefits<\/strong>, including construction job creation and local workforce training for union roles, reinforcing Mayor Ras Baraka\u2019s citywide push for equitable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Latifah, visibly moved at the April 26 groundbreaking ceremony, reflected on the project\u2019s origins. \u201cI grew up around here, playing in West Side Park, a block away,\u201d she said. \u201cI saw what was needed on this block, houses that weren\u2019t lived in… so I thought, \u2018Why not here?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    The development arrives at a pivotal moment for Newark, where the housing crisis continues to deepen. A 2021 Rutgers study found the city needs at least 16,000 additional affordable units<\/strong> to meet demand. More than 60% of renters are cost-burdened, and the city\u2019s median household income hovers around $37,000<\/strong>, with over a quarter of residents living below the poverty line.<\/span><\/p>\n

    RISE Living directly tackles these issues, offering affordable housing options without sacrificing quality. \u201cThe affordable housing units are going to be beautiful\u2014just as beautiful as market-rate housing,\u201d Latifah promised. \u201cWe want people to have pride in where they live and not be pushed out of their communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    RISE Living has been in the works since 2016, weathering delays due to the 2008 housing crash, the Great Recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic. But Latifah\u2019s perseverance\u2014fueled by her mother\u2019s legacy\u2014never wavered.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cThere\u2019s no way this would be possible if [my mother] was not still in the midst of this,\u201d she said. The project also serves as a symbolic renewal of a block once marred by tragedy, including a fatal 2015 shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n
