The sweltering humidity of the Louisiana bayou did not just “cling” to the skin of the crew; it acted as a heavy, stagnant shroud over a production “teetering” on the edge of disaster. In 1973, the James Bond franchise was a “fragile” kingdom, its crown newly placed upon the head of Roger Moore. To “solidify” his claim to the throne, director Guy Hamilton demanded a spectacle that would “violate” the laws of physics.<\/span><\/p>\n

He wanted a boat to fly.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 110-Foot Leap into History<\/span><\/h3>\n

The script was a “skeletal” promise of the “most terrific boat chase” ever filmed. To “exorcise” the ghost of Sean Connery, the production team transformed the Irish Bayou into a graveyard of fiberglass and metal. Stuntman Jerry Comeaux was the “architect” of this madness, tasked with piloting a Glastron GT-150 at a “suicidal” 75 mph toward a wooden ramp.<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal was a 110-foot trajectory through the air, a distance that would eventually “carve” its way into the Guinness World Records. But the calculations, “meticulously” provided by Tulane University, could not account for the “mercurial” nature of a multi-ton vessel in flight.<\/span><\/p>\n
