When Diana Ross &#8220;stepped&#8221; into the studio to record her &#8220;reinvention&#8221; of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell\u2019s &#8220;Ain\u2019t No Mountain High Enough,&#8221; she didn&#8217;t just &#8220;cover&#8221; a hit; she &#8220;incinerated&#8221; the rulebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Against the &#8220;furious&#8221; objections of her producers and the &#8220;dictatorial&#8221; instincts of Berry Gordy, Ross &#8220;insisted&#8221; on a &#8220;sacrilegious&#8221; opening: a long, &#8220;sultry&#8221; spoken-word monologue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She &#8220;refused&#8221; to &#8220;start&#8221; with a chorus; she &#8220;chose&#8221; to start with a &#8220;whisper.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr data-path-to-node=\"4\" \/>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The &#8220;Anatomy&#8221; of a Studio Rebellion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the &#8220;architects&#8221; of the original 1967 duet, wanted a &#8220;cinematic&#8221; tour de force for Ross\u2019s solo debut. They &#8220;concocted&#8221; a six-minute &#8220;odyssey&#8221; that &#8220;climbed&#8221; through orchestral &#8220;strata&#8221; and gospel choirs. But the &#8220;monologue&#8221;\u2014a &#8220;breathless&#8221; recitation over a &#8220;swelling&#8221; arrangement\u2014was the &#8220;point of no return.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Berry Gordy, the &#8220;titan&#8221; of Hitsville U.S.A., was &#8220;repulsed&#8221; by the structure. He &#8220;viewed&#8221; the &#8220;dramatic&#8221; talking as a &#8220;commercial&#8221; suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBerry Gordy didn\u2019t like the version we did with Diana when he first heard it,\u201d Nickolas Ashford &#8220;recalled.&#8221; \u201cHe didn&#8217;t like all that talking at the beginning. He held it back because we wouldn&#8217;t change it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gordy was so &#8220;convinced&#8221; the intro &#8220;ruined&#8221; the track\u2019s &#8220;momentum&#8221; that he &#8220;suppressed&#8221; its release as a single, &#8220;favoring&#8221; the &#8220;safer&#8221; &#8220;Reach Out and Touch (Somebody\u2019s Hand).&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"10\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The &#8220;Climbing&#8221; Architecture of a Diva<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ross and her producers &#8220;engineered&#8221; a &#8220;slow-burn&#8221; victory.
