Denzel Washington has earned Oscars and nominations for his portrayals of Malcolm X, Rubin Carter, and others. Even veteran stars like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Gene Hackman have repeatedly stepped into the shoes of historical figures. Yet Ford built his career almost entirely on fictional characters, creating iconic figures such as Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

When Ford finally broke his self-imposed rule, it was in the 2013 Jackie Robinson biopic 42, where he played Branch Rickey, nearly 50 years after his screen debut in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966).

So why had he avoided playing real people for so long? Ford explained to The Hollywood News:

“I shy away from playing real people because I don’t think I’m very good at imitation. I find another path to take on a character. I don’t want to take on the obligation people are familiar with. I’ve been asked to play Robert Kennedy and other well-known people that the public is familiar with, but I decided against it.”

Over the years, he also turned down opportunities to play Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s JFK, Robert Baer-inspired Bob Barnes in Syriana, and Liam Neeson’s title role in Kinsey. He was simply uninterested in imitation or the expectations that came with real-life portrayals.

When it finally came time for 42, Ford approached it differently. To inhabit Branch Rickey, he transformed himself with prosthetics, including a paunch, wig, and fake eyebrows. Ford admitted that at that point in his career, he wasn’t thinking about the traditional leading-man roles he once dominated.

He also faced initial resistance. Director Brian Helgeland reportedly told Ford’s agent that he wasn’t right for the part. Ford, however, tracked down Helgeland personally, convinced him otherwise, and finally embraced his first real-life role.

In Ford’s own words, the experience was about more than just playing a historical figure:

“When I would occasionally suggest blurring the edges of the movie star personality, it was often rejected.
