Before he became the iconic Man of Steel, Henry Cavill was on the brink of walking away from Hollywood. The actor, now celebrated for his portrayals in Superman<\/em>, The Witcher<\/em>, and Mission: Impossible \u2013 Fallout<\/em>, recalls a period where repeated setbacks left him \u201ccompletely spent \u2014 financially, emotionally, and spiritually.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d been rejected twelve times that year,\u201d Cavill admits. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t even the big auditions that hurt \u2014 it was the silence afterward. You start to wonder if maybe the universe is giving you a hint.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During that challenging stretch, Cavill was passed over for major roles, including James Bond in Casino Royale<\/em>, replaced by Robert Pattinson in Twilight<\/em>, and lost Superman Returns<\/em> to Brandon Routh. \u201cIt became a joke \u2014 \u2018the guy who almost gets it,\u2019\u201d he recalls. \u201cBut it didn\u2019t feel funny when I couldn\u2019t pay rent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2011, Cavill had made a decision: his next audition would be his last. \u201cMan of Steel was supposed to be my goodbye,\u201d he confesses. \u201cI told myself, \u2018If this doesn\u2019t work, I\u2019ll hang up the cape before I ever wear it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The turning point came when director Zack Snyder called. \u201cZack didn\u2019t want Superman to be perfect,\u201d Cavill explains. \u201cHe wanted him to be human \u2014 conflicted, flawed, trying to do the right thing. That\u2019s exactly where I was in my own life. Maybe that\u2019s why it finally worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Stepping onto the set in the red-and-blue suit, Cavill felt an overwhelming sense of relief. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t triumph. It was relief. Like the world had finally stopped saying \u2018no.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet the lessons of those 12 rejections remain close to him. \u201cSuperman didn\u2019t save my career,\u201d he reflects. \u201cHe reminded me why I started \u2014 because I love telling stories about people who keep getting up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Cavill looks back on that low point with gratitude. \u201cFailure is part of the audition process \u2014 and life. You don\u2019t get to choose when it ends. You just keep showing up until the right story chooses you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
