In a chaotic and deeply partisan House Homeland Security Committee hearing on worldwide threats held on December 11, 2025, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem launched a scathing attack on Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of undermining law enforcement by defending “individuals who break our laws.” Defending the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement, Noem asserted her department was merely carrying out existing statutes, telling critics in Congress, “If you guys don’t like the law, go change it. That’s your job.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The hearing quickly devolved into heated exchanges, with Democrats raising sharp concerns about the scope of deportations under Noem’s leadership, specifically highlighting cases involving veterans, military families, and non-violent individuals. Magaziner argued that deporting such individuals, alongside “tens of thousands” arrested without criminal convictions, “is not what the American people think they signed up for” when hearing about targeting hardened criminals. Noem insisted that her agency enforces “the law as written,” denying that veterans were being deported and stating that DHS prioritizes violent offenders. She repeatedly redirected the lawmakers\u2019 anger, arguing that dissatisfaction with enforcement outcomes should be directed at Congress, not DHS, for the statutes they created. Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) opened the session with a personal rebuke of the Secretary. Thompson accused Noem of misusing DHS funds for self-promotion, citing a claimed $220 million contract allegedly given to associates for media coverage and her use of taxpayer-funded military property for residence. “Every penny that you spend on yourself represents the blood, sweat and tears of hardworking Americans who expect their tax dollars to be spent on homeland security, not promoting you and your interests,” Thompson declared, urging Noem to resign. He further questioned her handling of an asylum case involving an Afghan national accused of a Washington, D.C. shooting, which Noem labeled a “terrorist attack” while Thompson pushed for a different description.<\/span><\/p>\n
