In a legendary example of creative pressure yielding immortal results, heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath wrote and recorded their signature song, “Paranoid,”<\/b> in an astonishingly short time\u2014reportedly less than 20 to 25 minutes<\/b>\u2014simply to fill a gap on their upcoming album. This last-minute, “throwaway” track would go on to define their career, silence skeptical 1970s critics, and become one of the most recognizable riffs in rock history. The song was conceived during the recording sessions for their second album in June 1970, less than six months after the release of their self-titled debut.<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Sabbath Stuns 1970s Critics as a \u201cThree-Minute Filler\u201d Explodes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The band\u2014comprised of vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward\u2014was working with producer Rodger Bain in London. They had enough material, featuring epic, doom-laden tracks like “War Pigs” and “Iron Man,” but the assembled songs fell short of the required time for a standard Long Play (LP) record, leaving a critical three-minute gap. According to guitarist Tony Iommi, when the rest of the band went to lunch, Rodger Bain approached him with the urgent request: “We need another song. Can you put one together?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Iommi, who was not used to writing short, punchy tracks, immediately came up with the driving, fast-paced central riff for “Paranoid.” When Geezer Butler returned, Iommi played him the riff. Butler quickly scribbled down the lyrics for the 2:48 minute<\/b> track, which lyrically addressed feelings of confusion and depression. Osbourne, Butler, and Ward quickly joined in, and the song was reportedly completed, tracked, and recorded in a flash, becoming the fastest song the band had ever written. The band itself wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the simple, short track, preferring their lengthy epics. As Iommi recalled, “It was done as a filler.
