The Discovery of the Pay Gap<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The two actresses, who previously starred together in the 2011 film The Help<\/i> (a role that earned Spencer the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress), were set to reunite for an upcoming comedy film. The project was being produced by Chastain\u2019s own company, Freckle Films. Specific to Black actresses, they have reportedly made as little as 64 cents<\/b> for every dollar white, non-Hispanic actors make. The issue persists even among top earners; in 2018, all of the world’s top 10 highest-earning film actresses were white.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chastain insisted on a “favored nations” clause, a standard industry term ensuring that if one principal actor receives a better term in their contract (in this case, a higher salary), the other principal actor automatically receives the same term. This story of two friends\u2014one white, one Black, both Oscar winners\u2014banding together to confront systemic racial and gender bias is now frequently cited as a gold standard for meaningful allyship in Hollywood’s ongoing fight for true equity.<\/span><\/p>\n
