The final track on Queen\u2019s 1991 album Innuendo<\/i> is the majestic, defiant song “The Show Must Go On.” More than just a piece of music, it has become a poignant, almost unbearably personal farewell from Freddie Mercury, who was secretly nearing the end of his battle with AIDS. The story behind the vocal recording is legendary: a Herculean effort fueled by pure spirit and a shot of vodka that delivered a spine-chilling performance which stunned legends like Elton John.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song was primarily written by guitarist Brian May, though, like all tracks on the album, it was credited to the band. May composed the lyrics knowing they reflected Mercury’s own commitment to performing despite his rapidly declining health, featuring lines that would become his epitaph, such as, “Inside my heart is breaking, my make-up may be flaking \/ But my smile, still, stays on.”<\/span><\/p>\n

May remembers him being focused and energized, noting, “He went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal. While the myth suggests it was a single, perfect take, the reality is no less staggering. As confirmed by May, Mercury achieved the difficult vocal lines in only three or four takes, absolutely smashing the high notes with a ferocious, almost superhuman determination. The raw, defiant performance perfectly mirrored the song\u2019s theme of pushing through inevitable tragedy. The song was released as a single just six weeks before Freddie Mercury’s death on November 24, 1991. It became a profound musical testament to his courage, re-entering the charts and achieving significant success following his passing. Never performed live with Mercury, the song later served as the closing number at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness in 1992, where it was delivered by Queen with Elton John on lead vocals.
