Queen’s Freddie Mercury passed away at the age of 45, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Even in his final days, gravely ill, he continued to contribute to the music community that adored him, demonstrating a tenacity unmatched by many.

Among the final pieces he worked on, “Mother Love” stands as the last song on which he recorded vocals. He co-wrote the track with Queen guitarist Brian May. Sadly, Mercury succumbed to AIDS before he could complete the final verse. May ultimately finish the piece. Released posthumously, “Mother Love” is often considered one of Queen’s most underrated tracks and certainly their most emotionally charged and tragic.

“Mother Love” Has a Tragic Backstory

The recording of “Mother Love” took place during Mercury’s final months. The true tragedy lies in the fact that Mercury’s health deteriorated so rapidly that he was too sick to finish the vocal track. Brian May details the poignant moment on his website. “We got the last verse and he said, ‘I’m not up to this, and I need to go away and have a rest, I’ll come back and finish it off…’ and he never came back,” May recalled.

The song itself became a harrowing signal of Mercury’s declining health and proximity to death. Listeners can clearly perceive his voice weakening as the song progresses, until May steps in for the concluding verse. Despite his illness, he maintains the quality that fans knew and loved. His powerful voice, which his illness could not conquer, shone through.

Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor, reflected on Mercury’s final vocals in the documentary Days of Our Lives . Taylor noted, “I’m hearing [his voice] getting weaker, but I mean he still hits all the notes.” He added, “There’s an absolutely spine-chilling note in the middle of ‘Mother Love’…which is just a great bit of singing.”

May and Mercury worked on and recorded “Mother Love” between May 13th and 16th of 1991, just over six months before Mercury’s death. The sessions took place after the Innuendo album, Queen’s last release while Mercury was alive, which came out earlier that year in February.

The final song Mercury recorded with May was tracked at their studio in Montreux, Switzerland. This was the location Mercury wanted to be in his last months. May describes the studio as an “oasis” for the singer, a place where he could feel normal. “He obviously was in a lot of pain and discomfort,” May shared on his website. “For him, the studio was an oasis, a place where life was just the same as it always had been… He loved making music; he lived for it.”

May also provided insight into their final songwriting process. Mercury was fully aware his time was short. “Freddie at that time said, ‘Write me stuff..I know I don’t have very long; keep writing my words, keep giving me things I will sing, then you can do what you like with it afterwards, you know; finish it off’,” May recounted. “He had no fear, really.” Mercury’s determination was clear as he urged May to “Write me more… I want to just sing this and do it, and when I am gone, you can finish it off.”

“Mother Love” is a Testament to Freddie Mercury’s Legacy

“Mother Love” was finally released four years after Mercury’s passing in 1995. It was a key track on the band’s fifteenth and final studio album, Made In Heaven , a powerful and fitting tribute. The album was the perfect final farewell, celebrating Mercury’s enduring talent and tenacity. The song incorporates snippets and samples from throughout Queen’s catalog and Mercury’s voice, played at a sped-up pace toward the end.

The famous track concludes with a sample from a 1972 recording of Mercury singing the lead for a cover of “Goin’ Back.” A baby crying can be heard as the song fades out, symbolizing a retelling of Mercury’s life and achievements in reverse, returning to the beginning to ensure his story remains alive. “Mother Love” is more than just a song; it is an unforgettable testament to Freddie Mercury’s legacy and a celebration of the man himself.

It has been 34 years since the music world lost one of its most iconic frontmen.
