The Bowie Test: Proving Intimacy on the World’s Largest Format<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The path to an all-Imax feature was paved by a compelling test conducted by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema<\/b>, who won an Oscar for his work on Nolan\u2019s Oppenheimer<\/i>. Van Hoytema, a long-time Nolan collaborator (Interstellar<\/i>, Dunkirk<\/i>, Tenet<\/i>), revealed to Empire<\/i> magazine how a simple scene\u2014a child reciting David Bowie lyrics\u2014was the decisive factor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI presented Chris with a very big close-up of a child on the Imax screen, reciting David Bowie\u2019s \u2018Sound And Vision\u2019 from a piece of paper,\u201d van Hoytema explained. \u201cIt was very touching: that level of intimacy in both image and sound, fused together, projected in the theatre.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nolan called the results \u201celectrifying,\u201d<\/b> confirming the footage marked a major breakthrough. \u201cWe never would have been able to get those shots before,\u201d the director noted, signaling an end to the previous limitation where Imax was relegated mostly to action sequences due to the cameras’ operating noise.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ‘Blimp’ System: A Game-Changer for Sound<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The key technological advancement enabling this feat is a newly developed Imax film casing<\/b> known as a \u201cblimp.\u201d<\/b> This equipment was engineered specifically to significantly reduce the noise produced by the 65mm Imax cameras.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe blimp system is a game-changer,\u201d Nolan declared. \u201cYou can be shooting a foot from [an actor\u2019s] face while they\u2019re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world\u2019s most beautiful format.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nolan has been steadily increasing his use of Imax since 2008\u2019s The Dark Knight<\/i><\/b>, which was the first Hollywood movie to integrate the format for select action scenes. His 2023 masterpiece, Oppenheimer<\/i>, was notable for being the first film to use Imax black-and-white 65mm film<\/b>\u2014a collaboration with Kodak that required van Hoytema and his team to re-engineer cameras and create new film stock, as black and white film in that format did not previously exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nolan’s commitment to the format is reflected in the production’s massive footprint. The director previously told Empire<\/i> that he \u201cshot over 2 million feet of film\u201d<\/b> during the 91-day principal photography earlier this year. With Kodak estimating 65mm film costing $1.50 per foot, the total cost for the film stock alone is estimated to be around $3 million<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on Homer\u2019s classic Greek epic, The Odyssey<\/i> stars Matt Damon<\/b>\u2014reuniting with Nolan after Interstellar<\/i> and Oppenheimer<\/i>\u2014in the lead role of Odysseus. Tom Holland<\/b> plays his son, Telemachus. On choosing to adapt the ancient myth, Nolan cited a desire to fill a cinematic void: \u201cAs a filmmaker, you\u2019re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven\u2019t been done before… I\u2019d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, Imax production could do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
