MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA<\/span><\/b>\u2014After a decade away from their home country, rock legends <\/span>AC\/DC<\/span><\/b> returned to Australia on November 12th with a show at the <\/span>Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)<\/span><\/b> that was so electrifying, the massive crowd\u2019s energy caused a seismic reaction that was detected miles away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The ground motion was confirmed by the <\/span>Seismology Research Centre<\/span><\/b>, providing scientific proof that the band literally took their 1980 hit, \u201cYou Shook Me All Night Long,\u201d to heart.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Adam Pascale<\/span><\/b>, the chief scientist at the Seismology Research Centre, confirmed that the concert registered in the <\/span>two to five hertz (Hz) range<\/span><\/b> on a seismograph located at his company\u2019s office in Richmond, over <\/span>three kilometres<\/span><\/b> (about two miles) from the MCG.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A number of that magnitude on the hertz scale is enough to make the ground shake.<\/span> Pascale explained the mechanics of how a rock concert becomes a seismic event:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Cause:<\/span><\/b> \u201cWe\u2019re picking up the <\/span>ground motion<\/span><\/b>, we\u2019re not picking up the sound from the air.<\/span> So you\u2019ve got speakers on the ground pumping out vibrations and that gets transmitted through the ground, but also the <\/span>crowd jumping up and down is feeding energy into the ground<\/span><\/b>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Amplification:<\/span><\/b> He emphasized that the crowd\u2019s synchronization is the biggest factor, stating: <\/span>\u201cIf everyone\u2019s sort of bouncing in unison, it tends to amplify the signal so we can pick it up a little bit better.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The ground motion was equivalent to the low-frequency sound waves people were experiencing nearby, with one resident reportedly hearing the concert from ten kilometres<\/b> (over six miles) away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fun Fact:<\/span><\/b> While AC\/DC certainly rattled the earth, Adam Pascale noted that the <\/span>largest signals<\/span><\/b> ever received by the Seismology Research Centre for a concert at the MCG were generated by <\/span>Taylor Swift\u2019s <\/span>Eras Tour<\/span><\/i><\/b> shows in 2024.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During their show on November 12th in Melbourne, the band dusted off the Bon Scott-era classic track <\/span>\u2018Jailbreak\u2019<\/span><\/b> for the first time in over three decades.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The last known live performance of the song was in <\/span>1991<\/span><\/b>, making its return a deeply significant surprise for the Australian fans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
