Prime Video and the BBC have reignited the world of high-stakes espionage with the release of first-look images for The Night Manager Season 2, confirming the highly anticipated return of Golden Globe winners Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman. Set eight years after the critically lauded first season, the new six-episode run takes the saga of Jonathan Pine far beyond the restrictions of the original source material.
The first season, based on the 1993 novel of the same name by master spy novelist John le Carré , was a global phenomenon. A massive critical success, the limited series was nominated for thirty-six awards and won eleven, establishing a high benchmark for the sequel.
The Award-Winning Legacy
The original run’s star power was highlighted by significant industry recognition. At the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, the series swept three major categories: Tom Hiddleston won Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role as the hotel manager turned spy, Jonathan Pine ; Olivia Colman won Best Supporting Actress for her role as the tenacious intelligence officer, Angela Burr ; and Hugh Laurie won Best Supporting Actor for his role as the villainous arms dealer Richard Roper . Furthermore, the series secured a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series for its Season 1 director , Susanne Bier . The initial broadcast was a ratings triumph, becoming one of the most-watched TV shows in the UK in 2016.
Pine’s New Identity and a Global Threat
Season 2 picks up with Jonathan Pine living a quiet life under the alias Alex Goodwin , a low-profile MI6 officer in London. His calm is shattered when he recognizes a mercenary from Roper’s old network, dragging him back into the shadow world he tried to escape.
The new narrative expands the moral stakes, moving from personal vendetta to national stability. Pine is forced to infiltrate the operation of a new figure, Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (played by Diego Calva, a breakout star from Babylon ). Dos Santos’s network is an intricate web of arms, money, and political instability, with the action moving into Colombia where Pine must navigate an arms pipeline and the training of a guerrilla force. His route into this dangerous new world is through the reluctant businesswoman, Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone).
A Wealth of Talent Returns
The creative team has ensured continuity by bringing back key figures. Olivia Colman returns as Angela Burr , the intelligence officer who first recruited Pine and remains one of the few people who understand the weight of his past. Colman is one of the most decorated actors in modern television and film, adding significant gravitas to the cast. Beyond her Golden Globe for this series, she is an Academy Award winner for her role as Queen Anne in The Favorite and a Primetime Emmy winner for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown .
Other notable returns include Alistair Petrie as Sandy Langbourne , Douglas Hodge as Whitehall figure Rex Mayhew , Michael Nardone as Frisky , and Noah Jupe as Daniel Roper , whose childhood was shaped by the chaos of his father’s actions in the first series.
Behind the camera, David Farr, who worked on the original series, returns as creator and executive producer, extending the story past John le Carré’s original novel . The entire six-episode run will be helmed by a single director , BAFTA winner Georgi Banks-Davies , who previously won the prestigious award for directing the series I Hate Suzie . This unified directory vision promises a consistent visual and tonal thread for the new series.
The Night Manager Season 2 will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and will be available for North American audiences on Amazon Prime Video.
