The Bond universe is preparing for its most significant reset in two decades.
Daniel Craig’s tenure ended when No Time To Die closed his storyline in 2021. His Bond died — but the franchise is not finished.
After years of speculation, the 26th official James Bond film (the 28th if one counts the non-EON productions) is officially moving forward.
And this time, it is not being produced under the traditional EON banner.
This is the beginning of something entirely different.
The February 2025 Shift No One Expected
In February 2025, the film world was stunned by a seismic announcement: Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson — the longtime stewards of the 007 legacy — stepped away.
Ownership was sold to Amazon MGM Studios.
Broccoli, the daughter of original Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli, had guided the franchise from 1995 onward — beginning with the Pierce Brosnan era, then backing the bold decision to cast Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006). Her role was not symbolic — she was the final decision-maker on story tone, casting direction, and franchise strategy.
The creative logic of Bond films — from Dr. No in 1962 to No Time To Die in 2021 — flowed directly from the Broccoli family’s direct involvement.
That era ended in early 2025.
Who Is Now In Charge?
The reboot is now being guided by:
-
Amy Pascal (former Sony executive, worked on multiple Spider-Man films)
-
David Heyman (producer on all eight Harry Potter films)
Amazon considered a more participatory public approach early on — including the idea of online polling. That idea was put aside.
Pascal and Heyman now run the creative mission.
In March 2025, they issued a joint statement:
They were “honoured to follow” Broccoli and Wilson, and intended to “keep the spirit of Bond very much alive.”
They have also consistently clarified that Bond will remain male — despite online speculation suggesting otherwise.
What We Still Don’t Know
Bond 26 is moving forward — but the following remain unanswered:
-
Who will play the new James Bond?
-
Who is writing the screenplay?
-
Who is directing?
-
What is the planned story direction?
-
What is the target release year?
Those are not marketing-tease unknowns — they are legitimately not yet publicly confirmed.
What is certain is that Bond 26 represents the first true outside-the-family creative relaunch in the history of the series.
Why This Moment Matters
From the 1960s to the early 2020s, the Bond franchise was shaped by a small decision-making core. This shaped everything — from tone to casting to music.
For the first time, Bond is a corporate-studio property rather than a family-run feature brand.
This is not just “the next Bond film.”
This is a new answer to the question:
What is James Bond in a world where the familiar creative structure is gone?
The only confirmed fact today is that Bond will return — in a new configuration — with new producers and new philosophy behind the camera.
Bond 26 is not just another sequel.
It is the beginning of a new continuity.
