Love, Trust, and Craft: Spike Lee Reflects on a Lifelong Creative Bond with Denzel Washington

Spike Lee is very clear about what makes his decades-long friendship with Denzel Washington so meaningful — the foundation is love and trust. That foundation has not only sustained a personal friendship, it has helped power some of the most memorable collaborations in modern cinema.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards in late October, Lee reflected on how their relationship has grown and endured since they first worked together on Mo’ Better Blues in 1990. More than 30 years later, both families are now connected, and for Lee, that closeness is just as important as their shared work. He notes that the friendship includes not just two artists, but two households — spouses and grown children — all of whom have grown alongside their careers.

Their latest collaboration, Highest 2 Lowest, premiered in select theaters in August and arrived on Apple TV+ in September. It marks the fifth feature they have made together — following Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man. Lee acknowledges that it could end up being their last, as Washington has spoken publicly about eventually stepping aside from acting — while still accepting select work.

Lee is incredibly proud of what they have built together: a body of work that has connected with audiences and endured over time. To him, the real legacy isn’t awards — though Washington famously earned his first Oscar for Training Day — but the work itself. Their partnership has become an example of consistency, respect, and creative excellence. Washington, too, has echoed that sense of mutual respect — calling Lee his “brother from another mother” when Lee presented him with an honorary Palme d’Or earlier this year in Cannes.

In a creative industry where professional ties sometimes fade quickly, this one has instead deepened. It’s a friendship rooted not in contracts, fame, or headlines — but in loyalty, shared history, and an unwavering commitment to the craft of filmmaking.

Whether they collaborate again or not, their five films already stand as one of the most notable director-actor partnerships of their era — proof of what can happen when trust and respect stay at the center of the work.
