Even Hollywood’s biggest stars aren’t immune to the whims of their children — and for Scarlett Johansson, that once meant commissioning an opera-level gown for her daughter.
In a new exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, ahead of her appearance on Busy Philipps’ Busy This Week series on QVC+/HSN+, the Black Widow actress opened up about what she calls the most “outrageous” gift she’s ever given her daughter, Rose, now 11.
The request? A Marie Antoinette gown, complete with hoop skirt, corset, and intricate detailing — all handmade by a dressmaker in Ukraine who creates costumes for professional operas.
A Dress Fit for a Mini Queen
“My daughter asked for a Marie Antoinette gown,” Johansson recalled with a laugh. “And this woman, who was an amazing dressmaker who made all the costumes for all these operas in Ukraine, made a full opera-like Marie Antoinette dress with a hoop skirt and corset for my daughter.”
The actress admitted the dress was far more elaborate than she anticipated.
“It was outrageous,” Johansson said. “You can let it out so that she’ll wear it over the years, and she still puts it on — she looks so cute.”
Though some might assume the lavish costume was destined for Halloween, Johansson revealed that her daughter chose a far more memorable occasion to debut it.
“She actually wore it to my wedding, which was really spectacular,” she said. “She had her little dress on, and then she was like, ‘Change me now.’ And I was like, in the middle of the wedding, ‘We’ll be right back — we have a costume change for Rose.’”
Johansson shares Rose with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac, and she is also mom to Cosmo, 4, whom she shares with her husband, Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost.
A Glimpse Into Mom Life
While the Oscar-nominated actress is famously private about her family, she occasionally offers glimpses into her parenting experiences.
During a January 2025 appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends, Johansson discussed having a candid conversation with her daughter about “ghosting” — the act of abruptly cutting off communication without explanation.
“I just had this conversation with my 10-year-old daughter about ghosting,” Johansson shared. “There was this little boy that liked her, and she just stopped talking to him straight up — and he felt terrible.”
The actress said she used the situation as a teaching moment, explaining to her daughter that ignoring someone without explanation can deeply hurt their feelings.
“It really makes the other person feel terrible about themselves,” she said, admitting with a laugh that she’d once done the same thing in her own dating days. “I hate confrontation. But honestly, being ghosted is awful because you’re just left with no answers.”
Balancing Stardom and School Runs
Beyond movie sets and red carpets, Johansson is currently navigating something far more relatable: back-to-school season.
Speaking to E! News at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, she joked about the chaotic transition from summer to the school year.
“My daughter’s school started the day after Labor Day, which I think is rude actually,” Johansson quipped. “I was not prepared.”
She added that it’s been a “very, very busy time,” but expressed excitement about being back at TIFF — one of the film industry’s biggest annual events.
A Star Who Keeps It Real
From couture gowns to candid parenting talks, Scarlett Johansson continues to strike a balance between Hollywood glamour and everyday motherhood. Whether she’s joking about back-to-school schedules or commissioning an 18th-century gown for her daughter, the actress reminds fans that parenting — even in the spotlight — is filled with surprises, humor, and heart.
And as for the outrageous Marie Antoinette dress? According to Johansson, Rose still wears it — proving that for kids, a little imagination (and a lot of tulle) never goes out of style.
