Before Benedict Cumberbatch became Marvel’s sharp-tongued master of mystic arts, he was reportedly standing at a far less glamorous crossroads. The actor had been offered Malekith, the Dark Elf villain in Thor: The Dark World, a role buried beneath elaborate makeup, armor, and prosthetics.
It was a major invitation into the Marvel machine, and Cumberbatch did not pretend otherwise. Speaking to BBC Radio 1, he said he was flattered by the chance, but his instinct told him not to leap at the first superhero doorway.
His answer was brutally simple: “I’d rather hold out for something a bit more juicy.” Ten words, one refusal, and suddenly a future blockbuster career took an entirely different path.
