“He Ghosted Us For 6 Entire Months” — Charlie Cox Confesses The 1 Chilling Rule Jon Bernthal Enforced On Set To Keep The Punisher’s Darkness Alive.

Charlie Cox has described working with Jon Bernthal as an experience that was both intimidating and unforgettable, especially during Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again. According to Cox, Bernthal approached the role with a level of intensity that changed the entire atmosphere on set.

“He ghosted us for six entire months,” Cox reportedly confessed, explaining that Bernthal created a strict no-contact rule while filming. The decision was not about arrogance or distance for its own sake. It was, in Cox’s view, part of Bernthal’s attempt to stay locked inside the emotional darkness of The Punisher.

Cox said he tried several times to reach out casually, including inviting Bernthal to dinner, but the actor refused to break character’s emotional grip. Instead of relaxing with the cast after long days of shooting, Bernthal allegedly kept himself isolated, carrying Frank Castle’s grief and rage with him even when cameras were not rolling.

That commitment, Cox suggested, made every shared scene feel unpredictable. Bernthal did not simply arrive on set to perform lines. He brought a heavy, haunted energy that forced everyone around him to respond honestly. For Cox, acting opposite him was less like a normal scene partnership and more like stepping into Frank Castle’s world.

Bernthal’s Punisher has always stood apart because of that raw, wounded intensity. His version of Frank Castle is not polished or heroic in the traditional sense. He is broken, dangerous, and driven by pain. Cox believes Bernthal’s extreme preparation helped preserve that darkness, making the character feel frighteningly real.

While such a method can sound severe, Cox appeared to frame it as proof of Bernthal’s dedication. The isolation, the silence, and the emotional distance all served one purpose: protecting the truth of Frank Castle.

With Born Again bringing together two of Marvel’s grittiest street-level figures, Cox’s comments only raise anticipation. If Bernthal brought that much fire back to the role, his return as The Punisher may become one of the show’s most talked-about elements.
