Hollywood has always been filled with stories of glamorous first dates, instant chemistry, and fairy-tale beginnings. But if actor George Brent’s recollection of his first romantic dinner with legendary actress Bette Davis is to be believed, their relationship began in a far less elegant fashion.
The story dates back to 1939, shortly before the pair worked together on the acclaimed melodrama Dark Victory. At the time, both stars were among Warner Bros.’ most recognizable faces, and Brent reportedly hoped a private dinner would help break the ice away from the pressures of the studio lot.
Determined to make a strong impression, Brent arranged what was considered a lavish evening at the famous Brown Derby restaurant. The dinner reportedly cost around $100, a considerable amount of money at the time and a sign that Brent intended the evening to be memorable.
Unfortunately, memorable was exactly what it became—just not for the reasons he expected.
According to Brent’s later recollections, Davis arrived with the same fierce intensity that made her one of Hollywood’s most formidable performers. Rather than engaging in light conversation or exchanging pleasantries, she allegedly launched into a relentless interrogation almost immediately.
Before appetizers had even arrived, Brent found himself answering questions about his personal life, particularly his previous marriages. Davis, known for her sharp wit and direct personality, reportedly showed little interest in small talk. Instead, she pushed straight into topics many people would avoid on a first date.
The atmosphere only became more uncomfortable as the evening progressed.
At one point, a nervous waiter accidentally spilled a small drop of ice water onto a script that Davis had brought with her. What might have been a minor inconvenience quickly became the defining moment of the night.
Witnessing the accident, Davis allegedly fixed the waiter with a cold stare and delivered four cutting words:
“Are you utterly blind?”
The remark reportedly stunned everyone within earshot.
For Brent, the incident became the moment he seriously considered escaping the evening altogether. He later joked that he wanted to climb out the restaurant’s bathroom window rather than return to the table. Faced with an increasingly tense dinner and an uncompromising companion, the actor found himself trapped in what felt less like a romantic outing and more like an interrogation session.
Yet Hollywood romances have never followed predictable rules.
Despite the awkwardness, the arguments, and the uncomfortable moments, something about the evening created a connection between the two stars. Rather than ending their association, the disastrous dinner became the unlikely beginning of a passionate relationship.
What started as a tense two-hour meal eventually developed into a romance that reportedly lasted around two years. Their chemistry also translated onto the screen, helping make Dark Victory one of the most memorable films of its era.
In retrospect, the story perfectly captures Bette Davis’s larger-than-life reputation. She was famously brilliant, fiercely independent, and unwilling to soften her opinions for anyone—not even a potential romantic partner. For George Brent, that first dinner may have been a nightmare, but it also proved that sometimes the most chaotic beginnings can lead to the most unexpected relationships.
