“I Was Completely Deluded About My Build.” — Tom Hiddleston Reveals the 15-Pound Muscle Mistake That Lost Him Thor but Birthed a 14-Year Marvel Legacy.

In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, long before Loki became one of its most beloved characters, Tom Hiddleston believed he was destined to play a very different role. Looking back on that pivotal moment in his career, the actor has admitted that he once had a completely different vision of himself in the Marvel world. In fact, he trained relentlessly in hopes of becoming the mighty Thor. But what he now calls a “delusion” about his physical build ultimately led to a rejection that would reshape his entire career.

In 2009, when Marvel Studios was preparing to cast its ambitious adaptation of Thor, Hiddleston threw himself fully into the audition process. Determined to embody the powerful Norse god, he committed to an intense training program that pushed his body to its limits. Early mornings became routine as he dragged himself to the gym for punishing 5 a.m. workouts. Over time, he managed to add about 15 pounds of muscle to his frame, hoping the transformation would convince the studio that he could convincingly wield Thor’s legendary hammer.

Hiddleston approached the audition with the seriousness of a stage actor stepping into Shakespeare. He practiced swinging the prop hammer with aggressive force, imagining the heroic authority Thor was supposed to carry. At the time, he genuinely believed the role was within reach. In hindsight, however, he has described that confidence as slightly misguided. Compared to the towering physical presence the character required, he realized later that his body type and energy pointed in a different direction entirely.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige saw something that Hiddleston himself did not immediately recognize. Rather than viewing him as the thunderous hero, Feige noticed a sharp intensity in his performance—something more calculating, layered, and unpredictable. Hiddleston’s piercing gaze and theatrical delivery reminded many of classic Shakespearean villains and tragic anti-heroes. Instead of forcing him into the role of Thor, the studio began to imagine him as someone far more complex: Loki.

At first glance, the shift might have seemed like a consolation prize. Yet the decision would prove to be one of the most important casting choices in Marvel history. When Thor finally arrived in 2011, Chris Hemsworth embodied the powerful, golden-haired god of thunder. Meanwhile, Hiddleston’s Loki instantly captivated audiences with a completely different kind of presence—charismatic, mischievous, wounded, and endlessly fascinating.

Over the next fourteen years, Loki evolved into one of the MCU’s most layered characters. What began as a jealous brother driven by insecurity gradually transformed into a deeply flawed anti-hero struggling with identity, betrayal, and redemption. Fans watched Loki shift between villain and reluctant ally across multiple Marvel films, each appearance revealing new emotional depth.

Ironically, the physical transformation Hiddleston once believed would secure him the hero’s role may have helped him deliver the performance that made Loki unforgettable. His intense preparation and dedication gave him the discipline to fully inhabit the character’s dramatic complexity.

Looking back now, Hiddleston often speaks about that early rejection with gratitude rather than disappointment. Losing Thor forced him toward the role he was truly meant to play. What seemed like a missed opportunity in 2009 ultimately launched one of the MCU’s longest-running and most beloved character arcs. Sometimes the role you fail to get is the very thing that leads you to the one that changes everything.
