Cillian Murphy Opens Up About the Physical and Emotional Challenges of Playing Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders

For nearly ten years, Cillian Murphy was the face of Peaky Blinders, the acclaimed BBC drama that turned Thomas Shelby into one of television’s most compelling figures. But behind the sharp suits and steely gaze, Murphy faced immense personal challenges — both physical and emotional — to bring the iconic gangster to life.

The Physical Transformation

Murphy revealed that portraying the battle-hardened Shelby required an intense physical transformation. Naturally lean, the Irish actor had to gain weight to match the character’s imposing presence.

“It was a difficult decision,” he admitted when discussing the demands of maintaining Tommy’s appearance. “I’m naturally very lean. To look convincing as Tommy, who’s a soldier and leader, I had to put on weight in a healthy way. It was never easy for me.”

His diet became a test of endurance. “I tried to eat chicken and rice about five times a day,” he recalled. “By the third time, you don’t even taste it anymore. It’s just fuel. But Tommy had to look like someone who could fight and lead — so I did what I had to.”

Living in Tommy Shelby’s Mind

Beyond the physical strain, Murphy shared that the emotional burden of playing such a complex character was even harder to bear.

“It was difficult to leave him behind after filming,” he confessed. “Tommy is a dark man — driven, damaged, always carrying trauma. When you live inside that mind for months, it affects you. My family could always tell when I was in ‘Shelby mode.’”

Murphy spent hours delving into Shelby’s psyche — the haunted soldier, the calculating businessman, and the conflicted man beneath the surface. Each season demanded a deep emotional investment that left lasting effects long after filming wrapped.

Saying Goodbye to an Era

Ending Peaky Blinders after six seasons was another emotional hurdle for Murphy.

“It was a difficult decision because it changed my life,” he said. “Tommy Shelby gave me everything — incredible stories, amazing collaborators, and fans all over the world. But it was also exhausting. You reach a point where you need to step out and breathe again.”

As production moves toward a final Peaky Blinders film, Murphy says he feels a mix of gratitude and relief. “Tommy Shelby will always be part of me,” he reflected. “But I’m happy to finally let him rest.”

A Legacy of Dedication

Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby was more than an acting challenge — it was a transformation that tested his mind, body, and spirit. From forcing down countless meals to embodying the mental turmoil of a man shaped by war and ambition, his dedication helped craft one of the most unforgettable characters in modern television.

As fans await his final bow in the upcoming film, one thing is certain: Murphy’s commitment to authenticity has left an indelible mark on both the screen and the legacy of Peaky Blinders.
