“They used to call me ‘Dog’ before I ever made a record,” Snoop said with a grin in a recent interview. “That came from the house — from my mama.”
Born Calvin Broadus Jr., Snoop revealed that his nickname came from a playful comparison to the beloved cartoon dog, Snoopy.
“She said I looked like Snoopy, the cartoon dog from Peanuts,” he recalled. “I used to sit and watch that show all the time when I was a kid. So she’d say, ‘Boy, you look just like that dog!’”
The childhood nickname evolved over time — first “Snoopy,” then “Snoop,” and ultimately Snoop Dogg as he began making music in Long Beach, California.
“When I got older, everybody in the neighborhood called me Snoop Dogg,” he said. “It became who I was — the way I talked, the way I moved. That name carried a whole vibe.”

Under Dr. Dre’s mentorship, Snoop Dogg’s debut album, Doggystyle (1993), turned the nickname into an international phenomenon. What started as a term of endearment from his mother grew into a symbol of loyalty, swagger, and fun — qualities synonymous with West Coast hip-hop.
“When I came into the game, that name meant everything that hip-hop was about,” Snoop explained. “But deep down, it was still about that little kid watching cartoons with his mama.”

“The ‘Dogg’ helped me survive the streets and the fame,” he reflected. “It was like putting on a suit of armor — smooth, laid-back, cool. But behind it, I was still Calvin, still that kid my mama raised.”
A Name That Stays
Even as Snoop reinvented himself countless times — rapper, actor, entrepreneur, and gospel artist — he has never considered dropping the nickname.
“The name’s part of my DNA now,” he said. “It’s more than a nickname. It’s a story about where I came from — my mom, my childhood, my love for life. You don’t outgrow that.”
Asked if his mother still calls him “Snoop,” he laughed: “Nah. To her, I’m still Calvin. Always have been.”
