“I Had to Gain 30 Pounds in 6 Weeks”: Mark Wahlberg on the Extreme Transformation for Father Stu

Mark Wahlberg has long been known for his dedication to physical transformations for film roles — from the chiseled fighter in The Fighter to the intense bodybuilder in Pain & Gain. But for his role in the 2022 biographical drama Father Stu, Wahlberg faced a challenge that pushed him farther than ever before.

In the film, directed by Rosalind Ross, Wahlberg portrays Stuart Long, a real-life boxer-turned-priest whose journey from self-destruction to redemption required not just emotional depth but a drastic physical transformation. To authentically depict Stu’s transition from athlete to suffering patient, Wahlberg had to gain 30 pounds in just six weeks, a process he now describes as “terrifying.”

The Grueling Diet

“It was brutal,” Wahlberg admitted. “I’ve done transformations before — getting lean, getting shredded — but this time I had to go the other way. My body didn’t know what was happening.”

Under the guidance of nutritionists, Wahlberg consumed up to 7,000 calories a day, spreading meals every three hours. His daily routine started as early as 3 a.m., with high-calorie foods like eggs, bacon, peanut butter, and olive oil.

“I’d wake up and start eating,” he explained. “Then I’d nap and wake up to eat again. It wasn’t fun eating; it was mechanical.”

By the fourth week, the physical toll was undeniable. Wahlberg struggled with mobility, disrupted sleep, and joint pain. “It’s amazing how fast your body changes. I was doing it for the role, but it scared me a little — what it does to your heart, your energy, your mind,” he recalled.

Motivation Beyond Muscle

Despite the intensity of the transformation, Wahlberg emphasized that the physical change was secondary to the story’s emotional weight. Father Stu tells of a man who endures immense suffering but remains steadfast in faith — a theme Wahlberg found deeply compelling.

“Stu’s strength wasn’t in his body,” he said. “It was in his spirit. That’s what I wanted to show. The physical change was part of honoring his truth — but the real transformation was internal.”

Director Rosalind Ross praised Wahlberg’s commitment: “Mark didn’t just play Stu — he lived him. You could see the physical discomfort, but also the compassion behind every scene.”

Recovery and Reflection

After filming, Wahlberg spent months returning to his normal weight, reintroducing balanced nutrition and structured workouts. “You realize how much your body does for you when you treat it right,” he said. “Now I train smarter, not harder. But I’ll never forget what Father Stu demanded of me — it was the hardest role I’ve ever done.”

For Wahlberg, the experience was more than a physical challenge. “That movie wasn’t about muscles,” he reflected. “It was about grace. And sometimes grace comes through pain. It changed me — not just my body, but my soul. And I think that’s what Stu would’ve wanted.”

Father Stu stands as a testament to Wahlberg’s dedication, illustrating that the most demanding roles often require transformation not just of the body, but of the spirit.
