Tom Holland may be known as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but off-screen, he’s also famous for something else — almost giving away Marvel’s biggest secrets. In a recent interview, the British actor opened up about the extraordinary secrecy surrounding Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and how he came dangerously close to breaking that code more times than he’d like to admit.
“I had to keep it a secret for five years,” Holland revealed. “Marvel gave us this absolute code of silence. We couldn’t tell anyone — not friends, not family, not even our agents — what was happening in those films.”
A Script Shrouded in Mystery
Marvel Studios is known for guarding its storylines with near-military precision, but Holland said the lengths they went to during filming were “on another level.” For Endgame, he wasn’t even given the full script.
“I only got my lines,” he said. “They literally blacked out everyone else’s dialogue. Sometimes I didn’t even know who I was talking to!”
Even with limited access, Holland admitted he came close to spilling the truth on several occasions — seven times, to be exact.
Seven Close Calls
From late-night talk shows to online mishaps, the actor recalled several moments where his enthusiasm nearly got the better of him.
“Once, I was on The Graham Norton Show and they asked me who dies in Infinity War,” he laughed. “I started to answer before realizing — I can’t say anything! I froze mid-sentence while the producers waved frantically from backstage.”
Another time, while doing press with Benedict Cumberbatch, he nearly spoiled Iron Man’s fate. “Benedict literally covered my mouth. He saved me — again.”
Holland also admitted to accidentally showing a classified shooting schedule on Instagram Live, replying to a fan tweet with too much detail, and even leaving his script in a hotel room. “That was the worst one,” he said. “I thought I’d lost my career. Luckily, the cleaner didn’t open the drawer.”
Living Under Marvel’s Secrecy
Marvel’s protective measures were so strict that Holland received decoy call sheets and fake project names. “They didn’t trust me — and honestly, they were right not to,” he joked. “They’d tell me we were filming Science Bros 3 when it was really Avengers: Endgame.”
Despite the pressure, Holland says the experience taught him valuable lessons about discipline, trust, and professionalism.
“Keeping secrets that big was torture, but it made me grow up fast,” he said. “When you’re part of something like Endgame, you realize it’s bigger than you. You protect the story because millions of people are waiting for that surprise.”
Lessons From the Marvel Years
Now entering a new chapter of his career, Holland looks back on his Marvel journey with gratitude — and a bit of relief. “I’ve learned one thing,” he said with a grin. “With great power comes great responsibility — especially when it comes to spoilers.”
In the end, Tom Holland’s code of silence wasn’t just about keeping Marvel’s secrets — it became a defining part of his evolution from an eager young actor into one of Hollywood’s most trusted leading men.
