“I Wasn’t Cast as the God Thor”: Tom Hiddleston on His Failed Audition and the Journey to Becoming Loki

Before Tom Hiddleston became one of the most beloved figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he had his sights set on a very different role — the mighty Thor. In a recent interview, the actor shared how his early audition for the god of thunder led him down an unexpected path that would forever change his career.

The Audition That Changed Everything

“I wasn’t cast as the god Thor,” Hiddleston said with a laugh. “I auditioned for it, I even held Mjolnir, but it just didn’t feel right. I think everyone in the room knew it.”

It was 2009, and director Kenneth Branagh — who had worked with Hiddleston in theatre — was casting for Thor, Marvel’s next big step in building its cinematic universe. Hiddleston, then a relatively unknown British actor, was brought in to test for the lead role.

“I trained, I ate chicken and broccoli for weeks, I even wore a blonde wig,” he recalled. “But once I saw myself on camera, I realized — no, this isn’t me.”

From Thunder to Trickery

While Hiddleston may not have been the right fit for Thor, Branagh saw something else — a spark of intelligence and mischief that perfectly suited the complex role of Loki, Thor’s brother and rival.

“Kenneth saw what I didn’t,” Hiddleston admitted. “He understood that I could bring something different — a mix of charm, wit, and emotion.”

But transforming into the god of mischief was no simple task. Hiddleston revealed that he went through more than 50 costume tests before the final version of Loki was approved.

“We tried everything — different shades of green, leather textures, horn sizes, hair lengths,” he said. “It took months to find the Loki we all know now.”

A Role That Redefined a Career

When Thor premiered in 2011, Hiddleston’s performance immediately stood out. His portrayal of Loki was both layered and human — a blend of humor, pain, and ambition that elevated the character far beyond a simple antagonist.

Over the next decade, Hiddleston would reprise the role across multiple Marvel films — The Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War — and in his own acclaimed Disney+ series, Loki. The character became a fan favorite, embodying both chaos and complexity in equal measure.

“The Universe Knew Better Than I Did”

Reflecting on his journey, Hiddleston sees that missed opportunity as a blessing. “Chris [Hemsworth] was born to play Thor. Truly. And I was meant to play Loki. The universe knew better than I did.”

For an actor who once doubted his place in the Marvel world, the role of Loki turned out to be the perfect fit — a reminder that even setbacks can lead to something extraordinary.

“Loki taught me that sometimes not getting what you want can lead you exactly where you’re supposed to be,” Hiddleston said.

From failed audition to defining role, Tom Hiddleston’s story is proof that destiny — much like Loki himself — often works in mysterious ways.
