“It Happens At Night.” — Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio Face -20 Degree Temps for Scorsese’s New Nightmare, a Shoot She Calls Her Most “Brutal” Yet.

Filming has officially begun on What Happens at Night, and early reports suggest it may already be one of the most physically and psychologically brutal productions of Martin Scorsese’s late career. Reuniting Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, the shoot has plunged its cast and crew into sub-zero European winter conditions that insiders describe as “punishing” and “relentless.”

Production sources confirm filming is underway in and around Prague, where temperatures during overnight shoots have dropped as low as -20°C. The extreme cold isn’t a production inconvenience—it’s a feature. The film follows a married American couple who travel to a remote, snowbound European town to adopt a child, only to find themselves trapped in an eerie, frozen limbo where logic dissolves and their marriage begins to fracture. Much of the story unfolds at night, amplifying the isolation and disorientation Scorsese is deliberately chasing.

For Lawrence, the shoot represents a stark return to high-stakes dramatic filmmaking. The actress has recently spoken openly about feeling anxiety before starting new projects, making this grueling production a deliberate confrontation rather than a comfort play. Insiders say she has privately referred to the shoot as her most “brutal” yet—both physically and emotionally. Her character, reportedly battling a terminal illness, requires Lawrence to play a woman in constant physical and psychological collapse, a role already sparking early “second Oscar” whispers within the industry.

DiCaprio, meanwhile, is said to be fully immersed in Scorsese’s vision of controlled unease. The actor revealed that Scorsese instructed him to revisit Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo as a tonal reference, signaling that What Happens at Night will lean heavily into obsession, paranoia, and psychological doubling rather than conventional thriller mechanics. Though Scorsese was initially attached only as a producer, sources indicate he took over directing duties specifically to explore this “ghost-story-adjacent” terrain for the first time since Shutter Island.

The supporting cast adds to the film’s unsettling atmosphere. Mads Mikkelsen reportedly plays a magnetic and deeply unsettling faith healer whose presence destabilizes the couple, while Patricia Clarkson is said to portray a flamboyant chanteuse haunting the hotel bar where much of the story unfolds. Frequent Scorsese collaborator Louis Cancelmi also joins the ensemble, further grounding the project in the director’s trusted creative circle.

Visually, the film is being shaped by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, whose camera reportedly emphasizes ambiguity—snow swallowing streets, interiors glowing warmly while feeling unsafe, and a town that seems to resist being understood. The film is a joint production between Apple Original Films and StudioCanal.

While no official release date has been set, industry insiders caution against expecting a quick turnaround. Scorsese’s famously meticulous post-production process suggests a late 2027 festival debut—possibly Cannes—is more realistic than a 2026 release.

For Lawrence and DiCaprio, the frozen nights in Prague mark the beginning of what may become one of the most psychologically demanding films of their careers. And if the early reports are accurate, What Happens at Night isn’t just about surviving the cold—it’s about what’s left when certainty freezes solid.
