“I Wasn’t Cast as the God Thor”: Tom Hiddleston Reflects on His Failed Audition and the Journey to Becoming Loki

Before Tom Hiddleston became one of the most beloved figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he had his sights set on a very different role — the God of Thunder himself. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he originally auditioned to play Thor Odinson, only to discover that destiny had other plans.

“I wasn’t cast as the god Thor,” Hiddleston said with a good-natured laugh. “I auditioned for it, I even held Mjolnir, but it just didn’t feel right. I think everyone in the room knew it.”

From Aspiring Thunder God to God of Mischief

Back in 2009, as director Kenneth Branagh prepared to launch Thor, the Marvel universe was still taking shape. Hiddleston, then best known for his work on stage, had already collaborated with Branagh in theatre. That connection earned him an invitation to screen test for Thor — complete with blond wig, muscle training, and all the trappings of Asgardian might.

“I trained, ate nothing but chicken and broccoli, and tried my best to look the part,” Hiddleston recalled. “But once I saw myself on camera, I realized — no, this isn’t me.”

Branagh, however, saw something else — a quick wit, sharp intelligence, and a spark of mischief that would later define Loki. Rather than dismissing Hiddleston, the director suggested he try out for the role of Thor’s enigmatic brother.

Fifty Costumes and One Iconic Character

The journey from actor to Loki was anything but simple. Hiddleston revealed that he went through more than 50 costume tests before the team landed on the character’s signature look.

“We tried everything — different shades of green, leather textures, horn sizes, even hair lengths,” he said. “It took months to find the Loki we all know now.”

The attention to detail paid off. When Thor hit theaters in 2011, audiences were captivated not just by Chris Hemsworth’s heroic presence, but by Hiddleston’s complex, magnetic performance. Loki’s blend of charm, pain, and cunning made him an instant fan favorite, setting the stage for appearances across The Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and eventually his own Disney+ series, Loki.

Finding Purpose in Rejection

Looking back, Hiddleston views that early setback as a turning point. “Chris was born to play Thor — truly,” he said. “And I was meant to play Loki. The universe knew better than I did.”

What began as a failed audition became a defining chapter in his career — and a testament to the unexpected paths that shape an artist’s journey.

“Loki taught me that sometimes not getting what you want can lead you exactly where you’re supposed to be,” Hiddleston reflected.

In the end, Tom Hiddleston didn’t become the god of thunder — but he became something far more enduring: the god of mischief who stole the hearts of millions.
