“They Said, ‘She’s Too Sexy’”: Scarlett Johansson on Nearly Losing the Two Biggest Roles of Her Career

For Scarlett Johansson, one of the most recognizable faces in modern cinema, the label “too sexy” wasn’t praise — it was a barrier. In a recent reflection on her two-decade-long career, the actress revealed how that perception nearly cost her the two most defining roles of her life: Charlotte in Lost in Translation and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I was told straight up, ‘She’s too sexy,’” Johansson said.
“It wasn’t about my ability — it was about perception. And perception in Hollywood can end your career before it even begins.”

Fighting for Lost in Translation

Back in 2003, Johansson was just 17 years old when she auditioned for Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. Despite already proving her acting depth in films like Ghost World and The Horse Whisperer, industry executives were hesitant.

“There were people who thought I wasn’t right for the role because they assumed I would make the character feel too sexualized,” Johansson revealed.
“Sofia fought for me. She said, ‘That’s not who she is — that’s what people are projecting onto her.’”

Her performance as Charlotte, a thoughtful and introspective young woman feeling lost in Tokyo, earned her a BAFTA Award and the respect of critics worldwide.

“That film saved me,” she said.
“It gave people a reason to look past the stereotype — even if it didn’t erase it completely.”

Almost Losing Black Widow

Years later, history nearly repeated itself. When casting began for Iron Man 2 (2010), Johansson faced the same hurdle once again while competing for the role of Natasha Romanoff, a character who would become central to the Marvel franchise.

“I was told again that I was too sexy for the part,” she recalled.
“It felt like I was being limited by the way others saw me instead of the work I had done.”

This time, it was director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. who stepped in.

“They made it clear — they weren’t looking for someone ‘sexy.’ They wanted someone powerful,” Johansson said. “That difference in perspective changed my life.”

Reclaiming the Narrative

Over the course of a decade, Johansson transformed Black Widow into one of the most layered characters in the superhero genre — equal parts strategist, fighter, and emotional anchor within the Avengers team.

“I had to push past that image people had of me,” she said.
“I wasn’t trying to escape being called sexy — I just didn’t want it to be the only thing people saw.”

Looking Back — and Looking Forward

Now with multiple Oscar nominations, critically acclaimed dramatic roles, and a legacy as one of the most influential women in blockbuster cinema, Johansson says she’s finally at peace with how far she’s come.

“Being called ‘too sexy’ was never the issue,” she reflected with a calm smile.
“The issue was people not being able to see past it. Luckily, I always could.”

From defying typecasting to redefining strength on screen, Scarlett Johansson’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence — and the importance of being seen for what lies beyond the surface.
