“It Still Feels Like Magic.” — Selena Gomez Reveals the One Disney Theme She Never Gets Tired of Humming, Even After 18 Years and a 12-Hour Reboot Shoot.

Eighteen years after she first stepped through the glowing doors of the Russo family lair, Selena Gomez has learned that some magic doesn’t fade—it settles in. While filming her highly anticipated guest arc for season two of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place in early 2025, Gomez revealed that one small, almost unconscious habit still grounds her before every take: humming the original 2007 theme song that launched her career.

Despite now being an Emmy-nominated producer, global pop star, and one of Hollywood’s most influential multi-hyphenates, Gomez admitted that the melody remains her emotional reset button. Between grueling 12-hour shooting days on the Los Angeles set, she was often caught quietly whistling it while waiting for the director to call action—something she says she doesn’t even realize she’s doing.

“It’s automatic,” Gomez shared during production. “When things feel chaotic, my body just goes there.”

Coming Home to Waverly Place

The moment carried extra weight given the context. Gomez wasn’t returning as the lead this time; she was passing the wand to a new generation. Season two of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which premiered on September 12, 2025, centers on a fresh young wizard, Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown. The reboot features a modernized remix of the iconic theme performed by Brown, updated lyrically to reflect Billie’s journey.

Hearing that new version for the first time, Gomez admitted, was unexpectedly emotional. “It felt like watching someone else move into your childhood bedroom,” she said. Proud, bittersweet, and overwhelming all at once.

Still, it’s the original version—the one recorded when she was just 14—that she hums to calm herself. On set, longtime collaborator and co-star David Henrie, who returns as Justin Russo and now serves as an executive producer, recognized the habit instantly. “She’d be standing there, totally focused, and you’d hear it under her breath,” Henrie laughed. “It’s muscle memory.”

Nostalgia With Purpose

The reboot’s success suggests Gomez isn’t alone in her attachment. Since its late-2024 debut, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has consistently ranked among the most-watched titles on Disney+, drawing both original fans and new viewers. Season two deepens the Russo mythology, culminating in a major finale reveal that Billie is secretly Alex Russo’s daughter—a twist that reframes the entire legacy.

Under director Andy Fickman, the series walks a careful line between nostalgia and evolution. And Gomez, now firmly behind the scenes as an executive producer, sees that balance as intentional.

“This world gave me everything,” she said at the season premiere. “So coming back isn’t about reliving the past. It’s about honoring it.”

For Gomez, that honor lives in a tune she still hums when the cameras stop rolling—a quiet reminder that no matter how far she’s gone, the magic that started it all is still there, waiting to be called on.
