“I Thought I Was a Dead Man” — Harrison Ford Opens Up About Five On-Set Injuries That Nearly Ended the Indiana Jones Legacy

For more than 40 years, Harrison Ford has defined cinematic adventure. As Indiana Jones, he became the face of a generation of film heroes—fearless, witty, and relentlessly human. But while audiences watched the daring archaeologist survive traps, tanks, and treasure hunts, the actor behind the iconic fedora was facing real danger of his own.

Now 83, Ford has reflected on the five serious injuries that nearly halted the Indiana Jones franchise—and at times, brought him face to face with his own mortality.

“There were moments,” he admitted, “when I thought I was a dead man.”

1. Run Over by a Plane — Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

During an early stunt sequence, Ford was accidentally caught under a moving aircraft.

“My leg got trapped under the wheel. I felt the ligaments give way. Lying there, I thought—well, that’s it. Indy’s done.”

2. Spinal Injury — Temple of Doom (1984)

A misjudged backflip on set led to a severe back injury that required an emergency flight to Los Angeles.

“I was strapped into a back brace while finishing the film. I wasn’t ready to let go of Indy—not yet.”

3. Cracked Ribs — The Last Crusade (1989)

While filming the film’s intense tank chase, Ford slipped against the metal turret.

“The dust, the heat—I went down hard. I couldn’t breathe. I thought I’d punctured a lung.”

4. Broken Leg — Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2014)

Though not an Indiana Jones film, this injury nearly affected future productions. A malfunctioning set door from the Millennium Falcon came down on Ford, breaking his leg in two places.

“That one was rough. But I just kept thinking—you don’t play Han Solo and walk away quietly.”

5. Torn Shoulder — Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

Even in his eighties, Ford performed his own stunt rehearsals. A fight scene led to a serious shoulder tear.

“That one scared me more than I’ll admit. At my age, recovery isn’t guaranteed. For a moment, I thought—maybe this is where Indy’s story ends.”

Still Standing — And Still Smiling

Despite every setback, Ford always returned to set—bandaged, determined, and wearing his trademark half-grin.

“Pain’s part of the job,” he said. “I’d rather collect a few scars doing what I love than sit around wishing I’d tried.”

To fans, those scars aren’t just injuries—they’re evidence of an actor who gave everything to keep a cinematic legend alive.

“Every injury reminded me I’m still here,” Ford said with a laugh. “And as long as I am—Indy’s not done yet.”
