Emilia Clarke Isn’t Ready for 40 — and She’s Perfectly Happy Staying 39 for Now

For Emilia Clarke, time is currently negotiable. The actress, who turns 40 this October, has made one thing abundantly clear: she’s not ready to acknowledge the milestone just yet—and she’d rather everyone else didn’t either.

“Would you just not acknowledge that? I’m not ready,” Clarke laughed in a recent interview. At 39, she’s decided to linger. In fact, she plans on doing so for a while. “I’ve got a good decade left in me of being 39,” she joked, adding that the number 40 is something she’d rather not mentally clock just yet. Still, beneath the humor is calm reassurance. “I’m sure I’ll be fine. It’ll be fine. I’m going to be great.”

And professionally, she already is.

A Return to TV—On Her Own Terms

Clarke is currently celebrating the release of her newest project, PONIES, which marks her first lead television role since Game of Thrones concluded in 2019. The Peacock series pairs her with Haley Lu Richardson as two widows recruited by the CIA after their husbands are mysteriously killed in Soviet Union–era Moscow.

Returning to serialized television wasn’t a casual decision. Clarke admitted she took a long pause before stepping back into a format so closely tied to her past success. “It was definitely like, ‘Okay, Emilia, are we ready to dive back into this?’” she said. Ultimately, it was the script—and the chance to build something new—that convinced her. “The script was undeniable… having Haley be my sister and my partner in crime—this was meant to be.”

From Lightning in a Bottle to Perspective

Clarke’s relationship with Game of Thrones has evolved with time. She famously celebrated her 30th birthday on set in 2016, marking the occasion with a playful Instagram photo featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer—an image that perfectly captured her sense of humor even at the height of global fame. Dressed as Daenerys Targaryen, she joked about “spoilers” and toasted her “brand new thirty-year-old” self.

Now, with more distance, Clarke has gained clarity about just how rare that experience was. “The more distance I have from Game of Thrones, the more I can quantify it,” she reflected in a 2024 interview. What once felt overwhelming now feels extraordinary. “That was incredibly special and incredibly rare. I was just incredibly lucky.”

Not Avoiding 40—Just Not Rushing It

Clarke isn’t rejecting the idea of aging; she’s simply refusing to be hurried by it. As she enters a new chapter—balancing perspective, creative freedom, and projects chosen on her own terms—being “not ready” for 40 feels less like denial and more like confidence.

For now, 39 suits her just fine. And judging by where she stands creatively, she’s earned the right to stay there as long as she likes.
