Henry Cavill is officially stepping into immortality. The actor revealed the first-look images from the long-awaited Highlander reboot this week, confirming that production is finally underway after years of anticipation—and setbacks. The project, directed by Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame, signals a sharp tonal shift for the franchise, leaning hard into grounded brutality, physical realism, and operatic action.
Cavill shared two images on Instagram on Wednesday, offering fans a restrained but tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. In one, he grips a heavy sword with unmistakable intent; in the other, he appears mid-journey, hinting at the film’s globe-trotting scale. “Happy First Look for Highlander!” Cavill wrote. “This has been quite the journey for me… but it’s a special moment to be able to share this.”
A Long Road to the Gathering
Cavill was first announced as the lead of the Highlander reboot back in 2021, but the film endured multiple delays. Most recently, production was pushed back in late 2024 after Cavill suffered an injury during preparation. With cameras now rolling, the reboot finally feels real—and the early visuals suggest a film far closer to John Wick’s tactile violence than traditional fantasy spectacle.
That tonal alignment is no accident. Stahelski has repeatedly spoken about grounding action in physical performance, and Cavill—fresh off demanding roles in The Witcher and Mission: Impossible – Fallout—is a natural fit for that philosophy.
A New Immortal, A Familiar Legacy
The original Highlander starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scottish warrior cursed—and blessed—with immortality. The film became a cult classic, bolstered by Sean Connery’s turn as mentor Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez and Clancy Brown’s iconic villain, The Kurgan.
While details of Cavill’s character remain under wraps, the reboot is expected to reimagine the mythology rather than replicate it, updating centuries-spanning sword duels for a modern action audience.
A Stacked Supporting Cast
Joining Cavill is a formidable ensemble: Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, and Max Zhang. The script was penned by Michael Finch, with earlier drafts from Ryan J. Condal and Kerry Williamson.
A Sword, A Promise
The first-look images may be minimal, but the message is clear: Highlander is being reborn as a serious, muscular action epic. With Stahelski behind the camera and Cavill embracing another physically punishing role, the reboot aims to restore weight and menace to the phrase that defined the franchise.
There may still be only one—but in 2026, that one is sharpening his blade.
