What if, alongside dragons and direwolves, Westeros had welcomed a global pop icon? According to Emilia Clarke, that almost became reality. During a recent fan Q&A in London, the Game of Thrones star shared a surprising behind-the-scenes secret: Taylor Swift was this close to appearing in the series — until her world tour made the cameo impossible.
“The realm wasn’t ready for that much sparkle,” Clarke joked. “Taylor was almost in Game of Thrones. She would’ve ruled the North and the charts at the same time.”
A Crossover Fit for a Queen
Clarke explained that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss — both fans of Swift — had floated the idea of a fun, blink-and-you-miss-it cameo during the show’s later seasons.
“I remember them saying, ‘We might have a pop star visiting set,’” Clarke recalled. “I laughed it off… until they said it was Taylor Swift. I mean — imagine her in Winterfell? The dragons would’ve bowed.”
Like Ed Sheeran’s brief Season 7 appearance, the plan was never for Swift to take on a major character but rather appear in the background as a bard, noblewoman, or mysterious traveler passing through the realm.
The Cameo That Almost Was
At the time, Swift was deep into her Reputation world tour, performing to packed stadiums around the globe. Despite mutual enthusiasm, the logistics simply didn’t line up.
“She wanted to do it, we wanted her to do it,” Clarke said. “But she was out there conquering her own world. There was just no way to make the schedule work.”
Even so, the idea sparked playful conversation on set — including what kind of cameo Swift might have had. Clarke mused:
“She could’ve been a bard, a queen, a shadowy sorceress… honestly anything. She’s got that mysterious energy. She could’ve outwitted Varys and out-sung the Lannisters in one scene.”
Mutual Admiration Between Queens of Different Realms
While the cameo never happened, Clarke shared that Swift later sent her admiration for the show’s storytelling and its powerful female characters — something she deeply connected with.
“She said she loved the strength of the women in the series,” Clarke said. “Which makes total sense. She’s basically the Daenerys of the music industry.”
Even Benioff and Weiss reportedly joked that Swift’s presence might have been too powerful for Westeros storytelling.
“The realm wasn’t ready,” Clarke laughed. “Can you imagine her in a cloak walking through King’s Landing and then suddenly breaking into ‘Look What You Made Me Do’? That’s power.”
Will Their Paths Cross Again?
Clarke ended the story with a hopeful wink toward a future collaboration.
“If Taylor ever does a dragon-themed music video, I’ll ride shotgun,” she teased. “The Mother of Dragons and the Queen of Easter Eggs? Now that’s a crossover.”
For now, the cameo lives only in fan imagination — but in a world where dragons fly and legends rise, the thought of Taylor Swift in Westeros feels like a fantasy we’d all tune in to see.
“Honestly,” Clarke added with a smile, “maybe it’s for the best. If Taylor had shown up in Game of Thrones, nobody would’ve survived the sparkle.”
