Kelly Clarkson has collected Grammys, topped charts, and hosted one of daytime TV’s most joyful talk shows—but now she can add a truly unexpected honor to the list: a shark named after her.
During a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show that aired on January 15, the singer and host learned—live on air—that she officially has a namesake swimming through the ocean. The moment unfolded as Clarkson welcomed former preschool teacher Andrea Clulow and her husband, Darrell Clulow, who appeared on the show to discuss their shark education project and new children’s book, Finn & Friends.
“There’s no denying sharks can be intimidating creatures,” Clarkson told the audience as she introduced the segment, “but they’re also beautiful and a central part of our oceans.” What she didn’t know was that she was about to become part of that story herself.
Meet “Kelly Sharkson”
While explaining the inspiration behind Finn & Friends, Andrea casually dropped the surprise that instantly lit up the studio.
“I love sharks, and we had the opportunity last summer to go on a research expedition,” she said. “The first shark that we got to help tag—we adopted her, and her name is Kelly Sharkson.”
Clarkson’s reaction was immediate and priceless. “Yes!” she exclaimed, laughing and clearly touched by the tribute. The audience erupted, and the moment quickly became one of those classic talk-show surprises that feel both spontaneous and sincere.
Teaching Kids to See Sharks Differently
The Clulows’ mission goes far beyond a clever name. Andrea explained that the project was born after a shark attack off the coast of Australia made international headlines in 2022. The media coverage, she said, leaned heavily into fear—something she wanted to counter, especially for children.
“We wanted to teach empathy,” Andrea shared. “Sharks aren’t monsters.”
That idea became the foundation of Finn & Friends, a story designed to help kids relate to sharks and other sea creatures not as threats, but as important, living parts of the ocean ecosystem. By framing sharks through friendship and curiosity rather than fear, the book encourages young readers to rethink what they’ve been taught.
Conservation Through Connection
Darrell emphasized that they intentionally made the book interactive. Alongside the story, it includes games like word searches, drawing prompts, and activities that invite children to participate rather than passively read.
“When a kid sits down and draws something they love, they’re forming a connection,” he explained. “They’re not just being lectured about conservation.”
The couple also donates a portion of the book’s proceeds to organizations focused on shark research, ocean conservation, and marine education—turning storytelling into tangible impact.
A Perfect Fit for Clarkson
For Kelly Clarkson, the moment captured exactly what her show does best: blending warmth, humor, and meaningful stories. What started as an interview about sharks became a celebration of empathy, education, and unexpected joy—complete with a finned namesake.
And somewhere in the ocean, Kelly Sharkson is swimming on, unknowingly carrying a pop icon’s name while helping change how the next generation sees the sea.
