Latin music continues to make a strong impact in the United States, reaching a new milestone in the first half of 2024. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the genre generated $490.3 million in revenue, marking a 6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This growth signals the continued rise of Latin music as a powerful cultural and commercial force.
A Growing Presence in the U.S. Music Market
Matt Bass, RIAA’s Vice President of Research, credited the genre’s success to talented artists and the expanding reach of their music. He noted that Latin music is resonating with listeners across different regions and languages, thanks to creative partnerships and strong support from music labels.
This achievement marks the 12th consecutive year of revenue growth for Latin music in the U.S. The genre now represents 8.8 percent of the total music revenue in the country during the first half of 2024, highlighting its growing influence in the mainstream market.
Streaming Fuels the Rise
Streaming continues to be the driving force behind Latin music’s success. An impressive 98 percent of the genre’s revenue came from digital platforms. Paid subscriptions saw an 11.2 percent increase, reflecting a growing number of dedicated listeners willing to support artists through premium services.
The audience for Latin music also expanded, with 105 million accounts engaging with the genre—an increase from the previous year. This shows that Latin music is not only retaining longtime fans but also attracting new listeners at a steady pace.
Shifts in Physical Sales
While streaming surged, physical formats such as vinyl and CDs experienced a decline. Sales fell by 25 percent, dropping from $5.5 million in 2023 to $4.1 million in 2024. Despite this decrease, the impact on overall revenue remained minimal due to the overwhelming success of streaming platforms.
A Bright Future Ahead
With rising stars and established artists continuing to shape the sound of modern culture, Latin music’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Its expanding reach, digital success, and growing listener base indicate a vibrant future for the genre in both the U.S. and global markets.
